I spend a lot of time talking about reconciliations, payroll, expenses, and all the other things that come with keeping a business organized.

But behind the spreadsheets, I’m also a small business owner. I know what it’s like to have a full to-do list, wear more hats than you planned, and wonder how another week went by so quickly.

That’s probably why I enjoy working with other business owners so much. I get it.

Before things get busy, give your books a quick once-over. You don’t need to spend an entire weekend doing it either.

We’ve all been there. You see a charge, tell yourself you’ll categorize it later, and move on with your day.

Then “later” arrives and you’re staring at a transaction from June trying to remember what you bought, why you bought it, and whether you even recognize the company name.

A few minutes spent keeping up with transactions now can save you a whole lot of detective work later.

Yes, there are spreadsheets. And yes, there are plenty of numbers.

But bookkeeping is also tracking down weird transactions, figuring out why something is off by $12.47, answering payroll questions, cleaning up months of “I’ll get to that later,” and occasionally wondering what on earth that purchase from six months ago was.

A new season is a pretty good excuse to clean up a few things you’ve been avoiding.

Old transactions that still need categorizing. Receipts you meant to deal with weeks ago.

Accounts that haven’t been reconciled. That one bookkeeping task that keeps moving to the bottom of the list.

Pick one thing and knock it out. Your books don’t need a complete makeover in one afternoon.
