CONTROLLING NON-WORDS – OK

For those of us that want to come across as knowledgeable and clear, the use of non-words such as “ah, um, you know, like” (add your own to the list) will in fact come across as groping for content or lacking content.

In most cases, the person using non-words is unaware that he or she is even using these “pauses with garbage in them“.

In fact, we are subconsciously trying to....

HANDLING A DIFFICULT QUESTIONER

Everyone worries about facing the difficult questioner. Here are some key considerations that will help.

1. Stop worrying! In most cases, the listeners are looking for clarification and in fact are saying that they will agree with you if you can clear up the point in question.

2. Every question offers you the chance to reinforce your primary message.

3. If the tone of the question is challenging or loud, give the questioner 100% eye contact and smile. The smiling lets you enjoy yourself and scares the devil out of the questioner!

4. Remember to...

Silence is Golden

Being able to build respect and a communication partnership with your listeners is a major part of gaining your listeners’ trust, understanding and acceptance.

The foundation for building that respect is to first show your respect for your listeners by showing your interest in their input and comments during the give and take of the dialogue.

In today's fast paced business environment, we are aware that participants in a meeting feel pressed for time and as a result they tend to emulate the panel communication we see on television.

• Talking fast
• Increasing their volume
• Talking over the other person to the point that no one's point can be heard.

These are all examples of lack of respect.

GAINING THE FREEDOM OF GESTURES

We have all seen the individual who seems to have wooden or unnatural gestures. How do we perceive them as unnatural? They speak content first and then gesture. In most cases, these individuals have been “trained” to use gestures. As a result, they think content, speak content, think gestures, and then make a gesture.

GETTING YOUR LISTENERS TO YES… CREATING A NEXT STEP

We all share the goal of gaining greater success and understanding.

To reach that goal, it is important to have your listeners leave your communications accepting your information, ideas, and recommendations.

This applies whether the communication is stand up, sit down, in the hallway, over the telephone or email.

Most importantly, they must go away and do something…take the next step.

There are five simple and easy steps to making this happen:

IT TAKES ONLY FOUR SECONDS TO MAKE YOUR POINT!

Yet, a point or gesture well made… can last a lifetime!

For example, John F. Kennedy, moved the nation with “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Those words still ring true today.

Part of the appeal of that short message enabled listeners to quickly relate and positively react...

Your Listeners Have Changed…Have You?

As communicators, it is important to be aware that listener’s attitudes and expectations have changed and to be successful we must communicate in a context the “puts the listener first”.

For many, this is a challenge because it requires that we must switch from the patterns of the past to the communication sensitivity of the present.

• Know the Listeners: Spend advance time analyzing the mindset, needs and wants.

• Structure the Flow of the Content to the Listener: Make certain that your content tells them what they want to know when the want to know it. If they want cost first…give it to them.
