The make someone's day sports story today is about rowing - rowing over 3000 miles across the treacherous Atlantic. Solo. As reported by the Good News Network, 23-year old Mariam Payne became the first woman to row across the Atlantic, taking 59 days, 16 hours, and 36 minutes, before arriving in Antigua last Friday. The extraordinary feat was accomplished to raise money for an east Yorkshire charity.

For those who follow my stories, I like reporting on "ordinary" folks who complete amazing athletic endeavors for a noble cause. But this was no easy task. The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge is described as "the toughest endurance event on Earth. No support is allowed—all food, water, and other necessities must be brought along. Sleep deprivation, hallucinations, hunger and the ultimate test of body and mind will be balanced by sighting incredible marine life, witnessing the breaking of a new day and sun sets that cannot be viewed by land.”

According to the Good News Network, Payne rowed 15 hours per day alone in the vast Atlantic Ocean during 86°F days with strong winds. She spent Christmas Day rowing, and during parts of the journey was closer to the crew on the International Space Station than to anyone else.

“The week before last, I thought I wasn’t going to get the record anymore because the wind dropped and I was going nowhere,” she told The Guardian. “There was one day where I rowed for 18 hours and I got less than 10 miles, so that was pretty demoralizing. I could just feel the race record slipping away.” But she got a burst of energy when she could hear the screams from her family and friends waiting for her as she approached Antigua. May we all get that burst when we need it the most, and congratulations to an incredible athlete.

Happy Make Someone's Day sports Friday! This appeared recently in my feed because my daughter ran the Chicago Marathon last weekend (and got engaged!). It's very touching and shows what how a leader can model make someone's day. Jacqueline Nyetipei Kiplimo stunned the world during the 2010 Zheng-Kai Marathon. She witnessed a disabled runner struggling to drink water who was a double amputee. Instead of seeing her moment to run ahead of this struggling athlete, she ran alongside of him from the 6.2 mile mark to the 23 mile mark, helping him drink water at all of the watering stations. The compassion she showed caused her to lose her first place position and place 2nd in the race — costing her the win and the $10,000 cash prize. Jacqueline showed the world that day that to her, helping one another was more important than winning a race that she had been preparing for her entire life. Now this is what a true leader looks like, one that never leaves someone disadvantaged behind.

Happy Friday here's the sports make someone's day story. I was talking with my Uber driver this week and he told me this story that I found online about basketball great Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq wanted be a great player and have something to fall back on if things didn’t work out. He saw too many players wash out or have nothing when they retired. He thought his own shoe line was the way to go. Nike and Adidas said no, you’re not ready. Reebok said we’re going to get you your own shoe, clothes, etc. and he signed with them. He had watched people before – Bird and Magic (Larry Bird and Magic Johnson) in a small way, Mike (Michael Jordan) in a big way so why not be like Mike. He couldn’t beat Mike but could have his shoes next to his in the store. All Shaq’s shoes did very well. One night he was walking out of the Orlando arena and a women stopped him and cursed him and the price of his shoes. “How dare you charge so much for your shoes and make my babies feel they have to spend that much.” He said, “Ma’am, I don’t make the price of my shoes but here’s $2000, go buy what you need.” She threw the money back in his face. “Someone needs to make an affordable shoe.”

Shaq said to himself you’re right. My father would never give me $100 to buy a pair of shoes. He dropped his deal with Reebok and decided to make his own shoes. Then asked who’s the number one retailer? Wal-Mart. So he struck a deal with them. “People who come from where we come from, our parents don’t make enough to buy $100 shoes. Since 1995 I’ve sold 200 million pair of shoes. It’s all about taking opportunities. I really care about people. It’s not about me.”

I'm thrilled he's done well but more delighted that he realized the need to make shoes that were more affordable (see photo). Good for you Shaq, who continues to do things that make someone's day. Whose day can you make today?
