Performance Management Doesn't Depend on the Process.
While it is important to have a Performance Management process, in which recurring revisions, SMART objectives, bottom lines, follow-up, etc. are defined, I have seen many cases where it is still not followed, nor is it fulfilled, beyond the strictly formal, as is an annual evaluation, when it exists.
Performance Management depends on the habits of leaders to give feed back, in a productive, timely, accurate and assertive manner, to the members of their teams. It depends on the ability to keep a "performance diary" of each collaborator. To give positive and corrective feedback to people, understanding what are the motivating triggers of each. From giving feedback based on behaviors to reinforcing or correcting, not "attacking" people and issuing "decrees" on behavioral changes.
Performance Management is a day-to-day activity, motivation and not scolding or fear; guidance on the basis of clearly defined objectives.
