Man facing hate crime charges in Portage Park stabbing

A man is facing hate crime charges after he allegedly stabbed a woman and yelled a racial slur at her early last month in Portage Park, according to Chicago police.

Andres Stathoulopoulos, 20, was arrested Wednesday and charged with two felony hate crime charges as well as a charge of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, police said.

Stathoulopoulos is alleged to have yelled a racial slur and then stabbed a 42-year-old woman in the 5700 block of West Addison Street July 8 at 11:05 p.m., police said.

Stathoulopoulos, of Portage Park, is due in court Friday.

Man charged with hate crime for Little Village vandalism

A man was charged with a hate crime after allegedly vandalizing three Little Village immigration organization buildings earlier this month.

Philip Dominguez, 38, was arrested Saturday in the 2400 block of South Springfield Avenue and charged with five counts of a hate crime and criminal damage to property, Chicago police said.

Two of the buildings were vandalized between midnight and 3 a.m. July 19 in the 2700 block of West Cermak Road and the 2500 block of South Central Park Avenue. The third building, in the 2700 block of West Cermak Road, was painted between midnight and 3 a.m. July 20, police said.

The buildings were painted with swastikas and the phrase "Ice Rules."

Dominguez was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

An Elgin man and a teen are accused of attacking a woman at a Carpentersville McDonald’s, allegedly because of her sexual orientation.

The woman, whose age wasn’t released, was at the fast food restaurant May 13 in the 1600 block of South Kennedy Drive when the two teens struck and kicked her in the head and body, the Kane County state’s attorney’s office said.

Officials said the woman suffered great bodily harm, but did not specify the nature of her injuries or condition.

John Z. Kammrad, 19, and a 16-year-old boy are charged with felony counts of committing a hate crime, mob action, and three counts of aggravated battery. During the attack, the two suspects allegedly used a slur regarding the victim's sexual orientation.

Kammrad is jailed in DuPage County on separate charges, the state’s attorney’s office said. His next court date in the hate crime case is June 27.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in public spaces, and no one should be attacked because of their gender identity or sexual orientation, as is alleged in this case,” Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement.

“We must make it clear that Kane County is a community that welcomes all. I thank the Carpentersville Police Department for their swift response and detailed investigation, and I thank the victim for her strength, patience and cooperation.”

A man who allegedly robbed a 68-year-old woman of $3 in February and was tackled by the woman's son has died after suffering a gunshot wound during the scuffle.

Isiah Matthews, 58, died March 12 of complications from a gunshot wound, according to an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Matthews was shot on Feb. 18 about 2:30 p.m. in the 5000 block of West Congress Parkway during the robbery of a 68-year-old woman who had parked and was trying to get out of her car, police and the medical examiner's office said.

While holding a gun, Matthews approached the woman's driver's side door, forced it open and announced a robbery, according to a police report. After allegedly grabbing $3 from her, her relatives found out and chased Matthews, ending with a scuffle between the victim's 38-year-old son and Matthews, the report said.

When officers arrived they placed Matthews, who suffered a gunshot wound in his left leg during the fight, into custody after the 68-year-old woman identified him as the robber, the report said.

According to the report, no one the scene admitted to hearing a gunshot round or discharging rounds at Matthews, who was initially taken to Stroger Hospital but later was transferred to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, police said.

Area 4 detectives are investigating.
