“God completed His work that He had done on the seventh day, and He ceased on the seventh day from all His work that He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it.” (Gen 2:2–3)

Before Sinai. Before Moses. Before Israel became a nation, Yehovah blessed the seventh day and made it holy.

Some point out that Genesis does not record a direct command telling Adam and Eve to keep the Sabbath. That is true. But Genesis tells us when Yehovah sanctified the day. Its holiness began at creation, not at Mount Sinai.

Scripture shows this pattern elsewhere. Noah already knew the difference between clean and unclean animals long before Sinai (Gen 7:2; 8:20). The written Torah later gave Israel detailed commands concerning a distinction that was already known.

The same pattern appears with the Sabbath. Before Israel reached Sinai, they were expected to rest on the seventh day when the manna was given. Yehovah asked, “How long will you refuse to keep My mitzvot and My Torah?” (Exo 16:28). This happened before the Ten Commandments were spoken from the mountain.

Then, when Yehovah commanded Israel to remember the Sabbath, He pointed back to creation:

“For in six days Adonai made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Thus Adonai blessed Yom Shabbat, and made it holy.” (Exo 20:11)

Sinai did not make the seventh day holy. Yehovah had already done that in Eden. Sinai placed the command in writing and called His people to remember.

And who was the Sabbath made for?

Yeshua answered plainly: “The Shabbat was made for man, and not man for the Shabbat.” (Mark 2:27)

The word translated “man” is anthrōpos. It means mankind, humanity. When the 7th day was blessed, there were no Jews or Gentiles. There was mankind.

Yehovah chose the day. He blessed it. He sanctified it. Yeshua said it was made for us.

I do not keep the Sabbath because I am a Seventh-day Adventist. I am not. I do not keep it to earn salvation, and I do not worship a day. I keep it because my Father commanded it, blessed it, made it holy and gave it to me as a gift. My Messiah kept it and declared Himself Lord of it.

When we hear the word "holy," most of us think of moral perfection. Sinlessness. Someone who always does the right thing. Those things matter. Yehovah Himself is perfectly righteous.

But that's not where the Hebrew idea begins.

The word 𝗾𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗵 carries the idea of being set apart. Separated for Yehovah. Belonging to Him and being devoted to His purposes.

That's why the seventh day is called holy (Gen 2:3). The Sabbath isn't morally better than Tuesday. It's holy because Yehovah set it apart.

Israel is called a holy nation (Exod 19:6). That didn't mean every Israelite lived righteously. Far from it. They were holy because Yehovah chose them from among the nations for His covenant purposes.

The Temple was holy because it was set apart as His dwelling place. The priests were holy because they were set apart to serve Him. Even the utensils used in the Tabernacle were called holy. They weren't moral beings. They had been dedicated to Yehovah.

The same pattern carries into the New Testament.

Peter writes, "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation..." (1 Pet 2:9). Paul repeatedly calls believers "holy ones" (saints). We are set apart because we belong to Messiah.

Then comes the part we often miss. Being declared holy calls us to live holy. Leviticus says, "You are to be holy, for I am holy" (Lev 19:2). Peter repeats the same command in 1 Peter 1:15-16.

Holiness is both a position and a calling.

Yehovah sets us apart. Then He teaches us how those who belong to Him should live. That's one reason He gave His Torah. It shows what a people set apart for Him look like in everyday life.

Maybe that's why Scripture spends so much time talking about holiness. It isn't just about avoiding sin. It's about belonging to Yehovah. And when you belong to Him, your life begins to look different because He has set you apart for Himself.

Have you ever noticed this? Out of all the commandments Yehovah gave, one of them is simply... stop. I've always found that amazing.

YHVH, who made heaven and earth. The God who never gets tired. The One who never sleeps, who didn't need a Sabbath, but knew that we would.

"Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yehovah your God..." (Exodus 20:9-10)

There's something about that which has always stayed with me. The world keeps telling us to do more:
- Work harder.
- Earn more.
- Build more.
- Keep going.
- Don't stop.

Then the Sabbath comes around and Yehovah says, "Stop."

The Sabbath isn't just about putting work aside. It's about making room for what matters most. Time with Yehovah. Time with family. Time to slow down and remember who really holds everything together.

He knows us. He's not trying to keep us from something good, but He knows how quickly work becomes our identity. How easily we convince ourselves that everything depends on us, but the truth is, it doesn't.

The sun still comes up. The earth keeps turning.
Yehovah is still on His throne.

I think keeping the Sabbath reminds me of that as much as anything else. Every week I'm forced to admit that the work will still be there. The jobs around the house can wait. There are things I simply won't finish. And guess what... the world doesn't fall apart.

Maybe that's one of the greatest gifts hidden in the Sabbath. Once every seven days, Yehovah sets apart a day for His people to stop. I think that's one of the kindest gifts He ever gave us.
