This is the moment to stand up for the truth. You might be thinking the same thing too.

As we face a once-in-a-lifetime choice about the future of this great country, we must choose a truth-teller. The choice is an easy one, we’re faced with being led by someone who does their best to stand up for the truth, as messy as that can be in a democracy like ours, or facing an autocracy led by a known habitual liar.

I’m a truth seeker. Those who work with me know that my first step in the process of guiding people and teams is to look deeply into the “why” of what they’re seeking, the truth about their quest and what they stand for. And so it’s fitting that at this time of standing up for the truth, I offer you this soundtrack.

These are songs about truth, freedom, justice, democracy and songs that simply ring with the truth. As a client of mine wisely says in their leadership principles “only the truth sounds like the truth, no secrets, no lies of omission, no hedging and dodging.”

May these songs inspire you to vote for people who speak the truth.

Friends, like you, I've been navigating the drama and radical shifts of our times, feeling the need for respite and a glimpse of new possibilities. Do you feel it too? Not avoidance, but inspiration—a sneak peek at what could be before diving back into the fray.

Music has always had the power to transport me to other places and bring me back home safe and sound. I get hooked on the unexpected changes, the shifts from song to song, the enigmatic buzz, the romance, and the fresh combinations of notes. A voice, a lyric that draws me in, evoking memories and emotions. My imagination ignites, and I find myself in a safe place where fresh perspectives and an optimistic glimpse of the future come into view. I breathe it in.

Before we return to saving democracy, co-creating a better, more equitable world, and keeping our loved ones safe and cared for, I offer you this soundtrack. May it take you to uncharted territories, bring you home, inspire you, and renew your strength in this summer of extreme change and choice.

Turn down the lights, turn up the inspiration, turn on the possibilities.

It’s been a minute. We’re overdue for connecting and a new playlist.

This to me is the time of year for rising, shedding winter’s cloak, celebrating spring and the renewal around us. It’s especially fitting for me this year having come through a major health challenge in recent months.

I’ve emerged strong, and resilient, with a fresh appreciation for the wonders of life, and how crazily and swiftly we can shift from being in the light, to being in the dark, and back again.

This is an eclectic soundtrack of tunes of rising, emergence and celebration. They range from old songs that may be new to your ears, to brand new music that fits the theme; your soundtrack for rising. They’re meant to be a balm for our times and hopefully bring you joy, touch your soul, inspire your dreams and get you up on your feet swaying to the beat.

These months have seen the passing of some music greats, shifters of time and space, mavericks of the age; David Crosby, Jeff Beck, Burt Bacharach, Harry Belafonte, David Lindley and Tina Turner, all give voice here.

Sherpa Music Vol. 18 Bloom

Spring is blooming, rebirth, love, hearing, breathing again, shoulders down, relaxed, green, warmer, eyes open anew.
Streets alive again, music echos out of cars and across sidewalks. We get our hands back into the earth.

Spring can be slow coming in some parts, and here in Chicago, it’s often just a hopeful dream that slips by right before we get hit with the full torpid blast of Summer.

Spring lets us pause. It gives us a break to recognize the simple joys of liberation and freedom - especially this year. It reminds us to be optimistic. It’s a fresh gleam in the eye that presents itself as a bright new day, ready to bloom.

It shifts my soundtrack to a new set of tunes inspired by the season. The changing light launches us into Spring music headed for Summer. Some of these tunes just sound like Spring, others are about Spring. Some are brand new and some are well-worn classics, standards inspired by Springs past.

It's a collection that fits the season and the times. Throw your arms around someone, dance around the house, open the windows and let the music spill out into the street. Enjoy!

Mardi Gras day upon us and I thought it a good time to celebrate that latent carnival within us and let loose a bit. We all could use a little break from harsh realities, without losing sight of how we navigate this rocky terrain with grace and courage.

I first visited New Orleans at the end of the seventies and ended up living there for about five years. I vividly remember my first Mardi Gras parade; Uptown New Orleans, nighttime, the street filled with people, garish floats, people carrying flambeaux, haunting crazy rhythms, loud music, beads and Mardi Gras coins flying through the air, and everyone yelling “mistah throw me sumpthin”.

We start this playlist in Uptown New Orleans on Mardi Gras morning with Bo Dollis, Jr. and the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians ready to rumble, and end, with our feet up and great Allen Toussaint after a long, magical day.

“The Mardi Gras Indian tradition dates back to around 1718. Runaway slaves from the transatlantic slave trade were taken in, protected, and hidden by the indigenous people of the continent in the Louisiana area. Throughout the years, the African and Native American cultures began to mix, creating a new masking culture.” - Eric Craig, Curbed, New Orleans

This is real-deal music from the soul of New Orleans. My guess is you’ll be up on your feet at some point doing the second line around your living room. I hope you are. Let the spirit move you.

"The songs of the Mardi Gras Indians are the most popular and accessible aspect of the culture. At Indian gatherings, songs are arranged in call-and-response fashion, with the chief improvising a solo vocal and the tribe responding with a repeated chant: shallow water oh mama! big chief got a golden crown! Popular chants have also become the basis for rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and hip-hop recordings.” - Mind Smoke Records, New Orleans

Be well, stay safe, dance, Jim

We want it warmer. Warmer weather, warmer connections, warmer bread, warmer hearts.

These tunes all sound warm to me. Some old, some brand new, some more lively than others. Put them on as you sit by your fireplace, kitchen table, or living room, and let them take you to warm places.

I hope they kindle the embers of invention and creativity and give you something to sway to while you go about your day. Click here to listen in https://www.jimcohensherpa.com/jim-says/2022/2/10/sherpa-music-vol-16-winter-warm Enjoy!
