My son loves chess, and from a design perspective, the knight is the most fascinating piece š“
Not only does the knight move peculiarly, but it also looks different. Every other piece in a traditional chess set is largely symmetrical and geometric.
And then there's the knight, which marches to the beat of its own drum.
The knight looks organic, expressive, and almost sculptural. It breaks the visual rhythm of the entire set, yet somehow still belongs.
From an industrial design perspective, the knight is probably the hardest piece to get right. Push too realistic, and it feels decorative. At the same time, push it too far into abstraction and it loses character.
The best versions simplify the horse to just enough detail and information to signal its character, such as the curve of the neck, the angle of the ears, and the posture.
You recognize it immediately, even in silhouette form.
If you were to redesign the knight, how would you go about it? š¤
