Tanit: a for home, 24x18, watercolor, india ink, acrylic, colored pencil, 2026
The Numidian goddess of fertility, the home, prosperity, family, and the moon, Tanit came to the Amazigh world through the Phoenicians and was the chief goddess of Carthage and Numidia, alongside her husband, Baal Hammon, god of crops, weather, fertility and war. Some trace Tanit's arc through ancient religions such as Astarte, Athena, Venus and Juno, while Ammon was Cronus, Zeus, Jupiter and Saturn. These both became Mary and her son Jesus in modern Christianity.
Tanit is found on homes in cities, towns and villages of all kinds throughout Tamazgha, indicating a Muslim, Jewish, or Christian house. Here, Tanit is replete with a community of homes, palm trees (prosperity), bees (community), eyes of god, a weaving comb (creativity) , and an ox (endurance). Prickly pears (good things are worth the trouble) on her arms, olive trees (Tamazgha) above her with a thunderbolt (willpower), a wheat stalk (generations), a millipede (flexibility), a bird (godliness), a snake (regeneration), fish and lizard bones (medicine, magic, & holiness).
