Last week, our team supported the production of the first-ever Illinois Local News Summit hosted by our client, Press Forward Chicago, and their partner chapter, Press Forward Springfield.

The summit engaged a variety of stakeholders, from Governor Pritzker and state policymakers to news funders and longtime journalists. Attendees heard about the challenges facing local news, the need for trustworthy local information, and solutions to expand access to fact-based news across Illinois.

APS worked with Press Forward to engage legislators so they could learn about the important role state policy plays in supporting local news ecosystems that benefit constituencies throughout Illinois.

Congratulations to Tracy Baim, Executive Director of Press Forward Chicago, Stacy Reed, Chief Program Officer of Press Forward Springfield, and everyone else who helped bring this summit together. Your work to address the growing crisis of local news “deserts” is essential.

As Illinoisans, we must continue to recognize that journalism is a public service that strengthens our communities and builds upon civic participation. Reverend Jesse L. Jackson returned to his home state of South Carolina, where he was raised in the town of Greenville. It was there, in the segregated South, that he found his voice through his faith and began his lifelong commitment to justice as a student activist.

Traveling by caravan from Chicago, Reverend Jackson’s body was brought home, where thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects. The Celebration of Life services began with a powerful horse and carriage procession through Greenville, as family, supporters, and community members honored his return. He then lay in honor at the State Capitol in Columbia, where the public lined up to pay tribute inside the rotunda.

APS & Associates was deeply honored to coordinate logistics and travel and support the planning of the South Carolina services for Rev. Jackson.

We are holding the Jackson family close in our hearts during this time of profound loss. Reverend Jesse Jackson’s passing is not only a loss for a family, but for a community, a movement, and a generation shaped by his leadership and voice. We were there to support them through this period of grief, and we remain committed to standing beside them in honoring his life with the same care, dignity, and love that defined it.

It was one of the greatest honors of our team’s work to lead the coordination of the Celebrations of Life services for Jesse Jackson. In the coming weeks, we’ll be taking time to reflect on what this opportunity has meant to us, starting by sharing moments from Rainbow PUSH Coalition, where the Reverend lay in repose, and from the Omega Psi Phi memorial service.

Thousands of family, friends, and community members came through Rainbow PUSH to pay their respects, with lines stretching down Drexel. There were so many powerful moments those in line reflecting on the Reverend’s speeches as they waited, clergy and artists offering prayer and song, a dedicated podcast room where stories and memories were shared, and the family greeting each person who came to honor his life.

APS & Associates was proud to work alongside an incredible team of Black women-owned firms to produce the Lying in Repose services: , MGPG Events, , and . We also extend our gratitude to the many partners who helped bring this vision to life: Rev. Charles Jenkins, Rev. James Meeks, Rev. Charlie Dates, Irving Street Rep, Leak & Sons Funeral Home, Minyon Moore, Shelley Davis, James Gomez, and the entire PUSH family with a special thanks to Rev. Bobby Lewis and Rev. Jeanette Wilson.

We approached this work with deep reverence, honoring a leader whose legacy changed the course of history. We are profoundly grateful to the Jackson family for trusting us with this responsibility during such a sacred time.
