During the World War II “Blitz”, large areas of London were destroyed. The subsequent uncovering of debris presented archaeologists with the opportunity to learn more about “Londinium,” the ancient Roman city from which modern London draws its name. When construction began on a corporate headquarters on this site in 2007, archaeologists uncovered antiquities, and worked with our client to create a museum experience. The result is a three-level exhibition with analog and immersive media experiences, interactive displays, and sculptural light.
STREET LEVEL: Over 600 artifacts from Roman times discovered on the site are displayed on a topography of pyramidal forms - a reference to classical architectural façade motifs. The collection comprises the most important archaeological discovery in Britain.
MEZZANINE LEVEL: A dramatic animation with evocative audio narrative by contemporary scholars tells the story of the Mithras cult. Projected figures emerge magically from the shadows into light. The god Mithras, the altar and the temple foundation are each rendered in translucent resin, set atop interactive displays that offer a stronger dive into content.
LOWER LEVEL: Moving beyond expectation, walls rise in structural light over the foundation remnants of the temple. “Haze” (a glycol/water, theatrical fog) never-before used in a permanent installation, gives light beams their physicality. Music, chanting, sounds of water, and fire create an encounter with the past as one of mystery and discovery, mirroring the cult itself, which remains an enigma to this day.
