Have You Ever Wondered What Happens to Your Airline Miles? ✈️

A client recently asked us this question, and the answer is: it depends on the airline.

Frequent-flyer miles don't necessarily pass to your heirs like other assets. Each loyalty program has its own rules.

For example, American Airlines may allow a one-time transfer of eligible miles after a member passes away with appropriate documentation. Delta and Southwest generally don't allow miles to be transferred under their current policies.

One simple planning step: Keep a record of your airline and other loyalty accounts, including account numbers and approximate balances, with your important financial information.

And if you're settling an estate, don't assume unused miles are lost. Contact the loyalty program to ask about its current policy.

It's a small detail — but one worth considering as part of your overall estate plan.
