DAYLIGHT • We spend a lot of time thinking about how lighting will look after sunset, but considering the natural daylight deserves just as much attention.

By enlarging and relocating this skylight to the center of the kitchen ceiling, the design team was able to bring more natural light into the kitchen.

When the opportunity presents itself during a renovation, don’t overlook the power of a well-placed skylight ✨

LOCATION • As much as we love aligning lights to centerlines and maintaining equal offsets, illuminating the verticals sometimes takes priority when a space isn’t symmetrical.

Take this bathroom: we intentionally located the recessed lights an equal distance from each door to make sure they were illuminated the same way which helps the space feel balanced.

Paying attention to these small details during the design phase makes all the difference when you’re in the space ✨

LIGHT DIARIES • My week and a half in Provence was full of inspiration: from pure indirect light illuminating the barrel vaults of historic churches to Roussillon’s golden-hour glow, with the scent of lavender swirling through the air. It’s easy to see why artists have been drawn here for centuries!

Exploring at my toddler’s pace gave us time to notice the little things (with plenty of stops for pastries, brocantes, and gelato, of course!) ✨

TRANSITION • By day, this living room is flooded with natural light from windows on three sides. By night, it transforms into a moody mid-century modern gathering space.

To honor the home’s 1970s roots, we integrated RGBW linear lighting at the base of the transom windows. The colored light gently washes the ceiling, creating an entirely different atmosphere after sunset.

How fun is that?! ✨

CENTERED • A friendly reminder: all sconces don’t have to be mounted at 5’-6” 😉

When sconces are intended to frame artwork, the artwork should drive the placement - not a standard mounting height.

Select the artwork and fixture first, center the overall composition, then determine the j-box location. If selections are still in progress during rough-in, ask your electrician to install a whip so you can fine-tune the placement later ✨

COLLABORATION • Once we determined the ideal locations for the recessed lighting, the design team coordinated the placement of the ceiling beams around them.

The result? Every recessed fixture landed perfectly centered within the beam layout, without compromising the lighting design. When disciplines collaborate throughout the entire project, the details are executed to perfection ✨

ART LIGHTING • Good art lighting is often hiding in plain sight.

Decorative fixtures alone rarely provide the quality of light artwork needs to look its best. That’s why we love to tuck recessed lights next to chandeliers to illuminate art.

While the placement may seem surprisingly close, it gives us the distance and aiming angles needed to wash the artwork ✨

DAY TO NIGHT • During the day, the lighting quietly blends into the architecture. At night, it transforms the mood of this living room.

We used minimal flangeless recessed fixtures that disappear into the plaster ceiling to illuminate the artwork, in-floor uplights to softly wash the drapery, and unlacquered brass push-button controls that blend seamlessly with the home’s other brass details.

The best lighting doesn’t always announce itself, it simply makes the space feel its best ✨

UPGRADE • Not every lighting improvement requires a gut renovation.

In this project, we preserved the existing recessed lighting locations and focused on upgrading the light source instead. By replacing older bulbs with high-quality LEDs, we created a more cohesive lighting experience between the untouched spaces and the newly renovated areas.

Sometimes the best solution is working with what you already have ✨
