🐘 Monday’s Elephant: Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜
Some elephants in the workplace are carrying things we cannot see. The colleague who shows up on time. The leader who delivers results. The employee who smiles, contributes, and keeps moving forward. They may also be experiencing domestic violence. And no one at work may know.
Domestic violence does not stay neatly contained at home. Its impact can follow someone into the workplace, affecting their safety, wellbeing, concentration, confidence, and ability to get through the day.
A supportive workplace does not require leaders or colleagues to become counselors. It requires us to create cultures where people feel safe enough to speak, know where resources exist, and trust that concern will be met with compassion rather than judgment.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I encourage organizations to ask the following:
Would someone experiencing domestic violence know that this is a safe place to seek support?
Sometimes the elephant in the room isn't what we see. It's what we don't know to ask about.
If you are experiencing domestic violence, please reach out for help. If you see or become aware of abuse, don't ignore it. Report it through the appropriate channels and connect the person with qualified resources.
Organizations, associations, conferences, and universities ready to create meaningful conversations around domestic violence awareness, workplace wellbeing, safety, and support: I welcome the opportunity to speak or facilitate a workshop.
