This poster by Valentina Kulagina reflects her influential role in Soviet Constructivist graphic design, where she developed a highly dynamic visual language for mass political communication. Created during the rapid industrialization drive of the First Five-Year Plan, the work mobilizes bold typography and photomontage to rally steel mill workers toward ambitious production goals, in this case the call for eight million tons of pig iron as part of socialist construction.

Created during Stalin’s First Five-Year Plan, this agitprop poster by Gustav Klutsis celebrates industrial mobilization through the figure of a valiant steelworker wielding industrial tongs and framed by factories, agricultural machinery, and massed laborers. Using bold red geometric forms and revolutionary symbolism, the composition reflects the drive for rapid Soviet industrialization and the “shock worker” ideal (udarniki), while referencing Leninist legitimacy through commemorative seals that reinforce the political authority behind the campaign to expand production and mobilize domestic resources. This is a two-sheet poster mounted to canvas lining.

𝗔𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪 • Travel posters emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a fusion of art and advertising, promoting railways, steamships, airlines, and global destinations through bold design. Influenced first by 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗮𝘂 and later defined by the geometric clarity of 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼, artists like 𝗔.𝗠. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲, 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘂, and 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 elevated the form with striking compositions and modern typography. Postwar designers expanded the style with brighter colors and larger type, capturing the excitement of air travel while shaping how audiences imagined distant places.

PAI’s debut 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 auction on May 20th celebrates this lively medium with works by 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀-𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗰é 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀é, 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻, 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗶 𝗦𝗮𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘃, 𝗡𝗶𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗶 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘃𝘀𝗸𝘆, 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗡𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗡. This 1939 New York World’s Fair poster was designed by Nembhard N. Culin, an architect working for Frost, Frost & Fenner: the firm responsible for designing several fair pavilions. Created in 1937 as an early promotional vision of the Fair’s iconic Trylon and Perisphere Theme Center, it reflects Culin’s close professional connection to the fair’s architectural planning and visual identity. This work, however, was not part of the poster design competition to promote the event, which was won by Joseph Binder. This is the rare large format.

Frederic Kimball Mizen captures the energy and elegance of Fifth Avenue in New York City, presenting it as a vibrant urban landmark that beckons visitors arriving by rail. A prolific American poster artist, Mizen was known for his refined, commercially engaging travel imagery, and this work reflects how New York in the 1930s already stood as a premier destination of modern culture and commerce, much as it does today. This design is mentioned as one of the most notable works for the “Travel by Train” campaign (Zega/Gruber), which was a cooperative effort by nearly thirty railroads to encourage rail travel.
