....and we're back!

Join us for the first event of the '25/26 BS*+Beer series events, this one we are starting from the beginning and covering the basics of what Building Science is and how we can improve building resiliency and efficiency, reduce maintenance, improve comfort, and reduce liability.

My definition of Building Science is it's the study of how buildings respond to inputs from the climate, occupants, and the mechanical systems and equipment we put in them. There are allegedly four control layers: Water, Air, V***r, and Thermal. However, in our landscape I pose there is a fifth control layer: fire. We'll discuss what all these mean and how it applies to the buildings we design, build, and live in.

Rachel Schleiger, coauthor of Firescaping Your Home: A Manual For Readiness in Wildfire Country will be sharing expert advice and recommendations on how to beautifully landscape your property while reducing your risk of damage from a wildfire.

Rachel and her family are residents of Magalia. The 2018 Camp Fire burned up to their house, but their house was not lost; largely due to their firescaping and fuels management.

This is a great opportunity to learn about controlled whole house ventilation, ERV’s, HRV’s, indoor air quality, ERV options, installation, and more.

We want to thank the owner-builders of for hosting the #5 field trip last week.
They have been doing an outstanding job constructing the home. This was an excellent time to see the house as straw bales are starting to get stacked.
Note that the corrugated siding covers 2x walls and the house wrap is placed over the walls that will be filled with straw. The house wrap is to help keep inclement weather out prior to the straw walls being plastered.

We hope everyone enjoyed the visit and walked away with a better understanding, and deeper appreciation, of straw bale construction.
