U.S. Charitable Giving Reaches $592.5 Billion in 2024 — What the Data Tells Us
Giving USA’s latest report shows charitable giving in 2024 totaled $592.5 billion — up 6.3% from the year before (3.3% when adjusted for inflation). That’s a strong signal in a year when many nonprofits were navigating inflation, resource gaps, and continued demand.
A few takeaways that matter:
Individuals still lead the way, giving $392.45 billion — 66% of all contributions — with an 8.2% increase over 2023.
Corporate giving rose the fastest (9.1%), signaling broader alignment between business and community.
Four categories hit historic highs (even after inflation): education, health, arts/culture, and environment/animals.
Giving by bequest dipped slightly (-1.6%), while foundation giving rose modestly (2.4%).
But perhaps the most important shifts are generational.
According to Giving USA’s Giving by Generation data:
Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly philanthropic — not only giving money, but time, goods, and platforms to causes they believe in.
Gen X is becoming the most likely to give to secular causes like human services and the environment.
Boomers still give the most in absolute dollars, but their overall giving share is declining as younger generations step forward.
This changing donor landscape has implications for how we steward relationships, communicate impact, and build trust.
