Klein Edwards Professional Services

Klein Edwards Professional Services Klein Edwards Professional Services (KEPS) offers online training for insects primarily but may cover other invertebrates butterflies, dragonflies, etc.

We focus on education of insects with a focus on biology, and ecology of them. We also will create training of other invertebrates but currently our emphasis is insects. We will begin on-demand videos for home school families and would love to here from home school parents what group of insects would be of interest to your children, i.e.

I completed the Barstow Marine Base Invertebrate collection project in mid-October. Due to tighter requirement with the Museum for taking specimens, I have decided to incorporate the over 1,200 specimens into my collection. I am taking my time with it and updating my Database as well as taking photographs of specimens I do not have. So all of this will take some time but looking forward to doing this.

I am also picking up on a previous significant project that I set aside while working on the Barstow project. It will involve our website and will let you all know when I get further along.

I continue working on this Marine Insect collecting project along the Mojave River near Barstow, CA The people who did the collecting are not entomologists and therefore did not take a lot of care in protecting them once collected as well as in the transportation of them. Probably 10-15% of my time was attempting to separate them in Orders and and them spending observational time to see if relaxing each specimen would provide a decent pinned specimen for identification and photographing. The Micro-leps have be the most challenging with Diptera next.

Once this project is complete, I will develop free training YouTube videos on how to collect, types of collecting, field storage, transporting, long term storage, re-relaxing and pinning for identification and photographing.

As the potential for governmental work in the area of invertebrates are likely throughout the world and from a cost saving aspect, many contracts will probably wish to use non-professional personnel to to do much of the collecting and leave the professionals for the more expensive and time consuming job of identification. This may also be project related work in utility companies as well as other similar businesses. So providing either field collection training or just make videos for people to watch to help.

As of last writing, I am still working on identification of Diptera on the Mojave River collection project. I do not have an exact number of Diptera specimens but I just completed pinning about 250 fly specimens for 0.5mm - 2mm using minutens and a microscope. I took a longer time than anticipated because I just recently found out I have a very serious cervical (neck) issue and the surgeon went over what is going to be required just to get me back to a minimal working condition. Due to a bad heart I am getting ready to consult with Cardiology to see which tests they conducted a year ago for my lumbar surgery and if those tests are adequate, I can move forward with Neurosurgery to set a surgery date. If any tests need to be re-done then mid-October will be very busy with doctor appts. The neck surgery is a 2-day procedure where on the first day then must replace a dissolved disc between my C4-C5 vertebrate on the anterior side which they enter jest left of my throat. That is about 2-hours. I spend the night in ICU and day 2 is working the posterior of the neck whereby they make an incision from the base of my skull down 6-inches. They will remove the bumpy part (Laminni) of my C4, C5 and C6 vertebrate and then fuse from my C3-C7. That is a 6-hour procedure. I will again spend at least 3 more days in ICU after which I am moved to the main ward for another 3-4 days. I will be fitted for a major leather neck brace and will be required to wear that for about 2 months. needless to say outside of my open heart procedure 7+ years ago, this is a very serious procedure. Also I suspect I will not get a lot done on identifying on the Project. So I am working as best I can to complete the Flies within a few weeks and them begin pinning and identifying nearly 600 specimens of moths before surgery. As I can honestly say I LITERALLY have a pain in my neck. but looking forward to getting it done. Someone told me about a month ago that the way things are going and keep removing vertebrates I may not have a spine. But this person told me that if I have no spine, I at least qualify to become President!!

Since my last post I am still working on Flies. I still have a few more midges but have started pinning Syrphids, Tachinids, Miscid, etc. which I have at least 300 specimens there and the client is heading back to the Mojave and collecting sometime in October. I may be done with flies but I have well over 600 moth specimens to pin and Identify from April's collection.
Getting wonderful information from all of this since the mountains around where they are collecting have been looked at pretty well but the basin area has not. So this is great data to help filling in the range maps.

I have been working on a Project to identify insects collected along the Mojave River NE of Barstow on the Marine base there. I have spent the entire month of July just separating and attempting to ID midges. WOW! if you wish to take that on I would recommend slitting the wrists fist. Currently I may be at 12-16 species. With separating over 600 specimens. The good news I should be finished by the end of July (probably 2018), no it will be this month and then I move to crane flies. How exciting!

Currently working on a insect collection project with a company that has a contract with the Navy (Marines) along the Mojave River next to Barstow. First collection they gave me was from April 2017 where I have at least 1,000 specimens.
