Living The Fortune Cookie Life

Living The Fortune Cookie Life We are 50-somethings that have decided to live our dreams. Many have called us brave, others have looked on in awe. My favorite is, "A great Adventure."

Winter has finally come to Philmont Scout Ranch. 8” of fresh snow fell overnight here at the National Scouting Museum. The drive from Springer took almost 50 minutes as opposed to the normal 30 minutes.

A new chapter in The Fortune Cookie Life story has started after 8 years, 6 months, and 14 days. We ended 2025 transitioning from living in our RV in Cimarron, New Mexico, to renting a house in Springer, New Mexico, about 30 miles away.

We had many memories, good and not-so-good of our time as full-time RVers, but it just felt right to make this transition at this time. Over the next few weeks we will be working to clean, repair, sell the RV. Hopefully it will be able to give another family a few more years of memory making opportunities.

In the off season I am going to recommend the addition of the 2-Day Geriatric Trek to Philmont’s summer offerings. The premise is simple. You have to be over 60 and have a buddy. You pick a backcountry camp at least 7 miles from a turnaround. You then choose the most difficult route to this camp and agree to carry at least 10 pounds of cool stuff for the staff at that location.

Upon arrival at your selected camp you will pick up a Ranger. This will be a random assignment based on available rangers on a set of days also visiting this camp. Their job is to make sure you get back to the turnaround alive and then you provide them a ride back to base camp.

Plan on doing dishes when the staff feeds you. It’s the least you can do as they are helping to make sure you wake up in the morning.

Sandra and I have completed four of these treks since our arrival here at Philmont.

It’s our third weekly hike and this we we followed a suggestion from Ruaidhri Crofton and hiked the short trail at the Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge & Conservation Area. A little over 2 miles but it was still a good time.
