You might want to grow your business by 20% next year, but are your processes in place to be able to do this? Do you know exactly which processes work best for approaching new potential clients, and which don't? Do you have the procedures, documentation, and training program to increase your staff as needed to accommodate the increased work load?

Across the company, do your processes "speak to one another", or are they siloed without the ability to respond to changing realities in other departments? Do you even have process documentation? Or are you just hoping that the new team members will "figure it out" as they go along?

Do the processes need to be audited by a third party to justify their worth? Are your processes already performing to your standards, or might it be worth consulting an independent expert to see if they can be improved, potentially saving millions of dollars or thousands of staff hours per year?

Get the picture? Those who don't break through and learn to train others to perform just as well as they perform themselves remain single-person entrepreneurs for the rest of their lives instead of going on to found large companies.

Your personnel are only as good as your processes. No matter how innately talented they are, they are unlikely to independently stumble across the best possible way to do things many times over. From the strategic perspective, this is a critical area that must be addressed and not glossed over.

Entire professions exist of employees and consultants who conduct research to scientifically discover ways to optimize a company's process so as to save minutes, dollars, or materials - every time an action is repeated anywhere within the organization. Yes, it is that important!

Process is a vital aspect of strategy that ensures consistent quality of work. Your process determines the financial cost of getting your work done as efficiently and optimally as possible, and in a sustainable way. Some companies meticulously optimize and document their processes for completing specific tasks to ensure that things are being done in the same way - and the best way - every time. Others don't.

Everything worth doing well warrants a process. When you discover a process or formula that works well, you want to ensure that it is written down, documented, taught, and then followed consistently throughout your organization. In that way, you can ensure that the ideas of the most innovative and efficient people in your company are transformed into a process that any employee can follow and repeat. This drastically increases the efficiency of your whole organization.

I've seen countless situations where the strategy was right on-target - on paper, that is - but the company had the wrong leader "match" for the strategy. The result was 'mysterious' failure to meet strategy goals, and recurring doubts and frustrations.

There was nothing wrong with the strategy - it was just that the thought process, attitude, or social skills of the leader in place were not a good match to implement it. After all, people aren't machines. Personality and worldview are just as big a part of our core competencies as our degrees or work experience and it's just as important to leverage these by placing them intelligently as it is to have the right mechanical equipment or formal certifications for the job.

Maintenance Strategies require you to continue doing what you're already doing while maintaining the same level of excellence. In this scenario, the leader is responsible for maintaining everything that's working. Usually, it's because the company is hitting all its marks, financially and in other performance areas.

This type of strategy is excellent for a leader who is invested in keeping order and maintaining the way things are being done already. The leader who might be precisely wrong to implement a disruptive strategy might just be the person you need to implement a maintenance strategy.

Optimization strategies do not require radical changes, but DO require many small changes to improve company operations whenever possible. This requires an attitude of perpetual commitment to 'make things better than they are today.' The ideal leader in this scenario is one who is extremely competent in things like Lean, Six Sigma, supply chain and operations.

He or she still has to have strong leadership skills but attention to detail is more important in this role than big-picture vision. In fact, someone who prefers to implement big, radical ideas may have difficulty focusing his/her attention on small or "boring" but vital process changes.

Strategies that 'shake things up' and cause growth are often necessary to create radical transformations within a company, in order to adapt to changing technology and market conditions. This type of strategy will require that the leader is also disruptive in nature.

You don't want a dictator or someone with no people skills, but he or she has to have the direct , "take no prisoners", decisive and transformational ability to take other employees far outside of their comfort zones. The leader must have both the passion and the confidence to lead the company to the promised land. This is a leader who's willing to take risks and manage those risks.

If you try to hand a disruptive strategy to a leader who is timid, quiet, or very attached and invested in the old way of doing things, you'll find yourself facing an ex*****on failure.
