TC Ministries is proud to include this recommendation by a pastor in Parrish Florida for the great work of Rick Vilardo at Parrish UMC in a capital campaign. Congratulations, Rick, on your excellent and faithful work!

When facing the prospect of our first significant capital campaign ... we decided to hire Transforming Christian Ministries. It was a decision we have not regretted. Rick Vilardo was our consultant throughout the process, guiding us through the selection of team leaders, coaching our teams, and customizing the program to the uniqueness of our congregation... Rick was regularly on-site to meet with me and guide our leaders through the entire campaign.

Most importantly, Rick grounds the campaign on the mission and vision of the church and who we are called to be in Christ. From day one the campaign was rooted in prayer, outreach, and a Biblical model of stewardship. I am certain that our campaign would have been far less impactful without the guidance and wisdom of Rick Vilardo and Transforming Christian Ministries.

It is great to be back at Oxford University United Methodist Church in Oxford, MS to see the new building they are moving into this week. Three years ago we raised over $6m for this building to be used by this vibrant community of faith under the leadership of Pastor Eddie Rester. Getting started now to eliminate the debt so the church can move forward, "Growing Generations."

Sometimes we are unaware of the messages we send in the simple things--like tipping our servers at a restaurant. Here are a few thoughts for encouraging "extravagant generosity."

What will it take to help church members practice what Robert Schnase calls “extravagant generosity”?

Creating a culture of generosity that sustains a church ministry into the future is a challenge, but can be achieved. In this edition of the quarterly Transforming Christian Ministries(r) newsletter, I suggest a few ways for church leadership to do so.

Tis the Season…To Heal a Nation

In their book, Paradox of Generosity: Giving We Receive, Grasping We Lose, Christian Smith and Hilary Davidson make a compelling case for the correlation between generosity and well-being. By generosity they include financial giving, volunteering, relational generosity to those close by, blood and organ donation, and estate planning. Their measures of well-being include happiness, bodily health, purpose in living, avoidance of depression and interest in personal growth.

Though they clearly state that correlation is not causation, their studies reveal how generosity fosters and reinforces positive emotions that contribute to health and well-being and even triggers chemical reactions in the brain that heighten pleasure, reducing stress and suppressing pain.

We are entering that time of the year when we often hear, “Tis the season…” “Tis the season of Thanksgiving”; being grateful. And “tis the season of giving gifts,” as we move into the frenzy that leads to Christmas.

Maybe this year we could include, “Tis the season to heal…” Gratitude and giving and healing are clearly related, say Smith and Davidson. Maybe we can be a small part of the healing our nation needs right now with “an extra measure” of generosity this season. Maybe we can give more to others than we ever have, and encourage our friends and family to do the same. Giving generously will change us. It just may change the mood of our nation as well.
