When it comes to your career growth, which zone are you in?

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: You attempt to do what you haven’t done before
- Explore new things and are not afraid to take on new opportunities
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁: You do what you already know
-No longer taking risks and become complacent in your current role
𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: You don’t even do, what you have done before
- Don’t even try anymore and possibly have already quietly quit

As you go throughout your career, you may find yourself in these various zones at different stages. You will have to decide when and if it is time to shift. Because you are in the comfort or coasting zone today, doesn't mean you have to stay there. The power is yours.

Are you a tech on the bench evaluating your next career move? I would suggest evaluating opportunities with your current employer first. Is there a clear next step for you? If so, do you know what it is? If not, then you need to determine your next step: either with your current employer or otherwise.

Examples of clear next steps...
1. 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿 in place that allows you to go from role or title A to B, and it is not a secret what is involved in moving up the ladder. This could be from MLS I to MLS II to MLS III

2. 𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 that has candidates in the pipeline for future opportunities. While in the pipeline, candidates receive core training, coaching, and development on the tools and competencies needed to succeed in a management role. Getting into the management track could be by an application or interview process.

3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 in place and you are being groomed for the role once it becomes open ie you are pulled into projects, have increased visibility and responsibility, and have/are receiving sponsorship from appropriate senior or executive leaders for your candidacy.

This is not an inclusive list of the next steps, but if the next step is not clear... there probably is no next step planned for you, and your future is left up to your manager's discretion. This may or may not be a good thing... you be the judge of this.

It cost to make a bad hire...

While there will always be a cost to pay, you can minimize the expense through your preparation.

*Organizations should have the tools to pinpoint top performers before the interview...

*Interview teams can find the right talent with proper job benchmarking that assess hard and soft skills needed for success

* Individuals new in their career or established and looking to pivot can learn their communication style, how their ideals show up in their work, their thinking and learning styles, and potential careers in which they can use their strengths to excel.

While I enjoy all things laboratory and the technical part of it, I have learned that if you don't focus on the people behind the profession, you will lack innovation, keep a revolving door of team members, delayed projects, and have people in positions that are not the best fit for their talent.

If you do things the way you have always done them, you will get what you always had. Can you afford that? Let's chat.

When I first entered the laboratory field, several of my colleagues asked, "Why are you getting into this field? It's not worth it. There isn't much you can do in this industry."

Ever since I was a young girl, I knew I wanted to help people around the world. I didn't know what it would look like, how or when it would happen... I just believed it was possible.

In 2011, I was blessed to blend my love of leadership and the medical laboratory to embark on my first international speaking assignment in Rwanda, Africa. I got on 3 different airplanes, stopped at airports in 3 different countries, and traveled nearly 20 hours one way to train fellow medical laboratory scientists.

It was a dream come true, and it was possible because I was a medical laboratory scientist.

I've learned never to let someone's limited view put a ceiling on your destination. They have no idea the journey already mapped out for you...
