The Future of Project Management: Embracing the Next Generation

In a rapidly evolving business landscape, the role of project managers is undergoing a profound transformation. A recent Harvard Business Review article, titled "What the Next Generation of Project Management Will Look Like," (link in comments) sheds light on the future of project management. As organizations increasingly adopt agile development and product management models, traditional project management activities are shifting toward autonomous delivery teams. Furthermore, technological advancements, including generative AI, are automating various project management tasks. Despite these changes, a recent global Gartner survey indicates that the project manager role is expected to be one of the fastest-growing in the next few years.
So, what does the future hold for project managers, and how can they continue to provide value in this changing context?
The article identifies ten "next-generation" skills that project managers need to thrive in the evolving landscape. These skills go beyond traditional project governance and methodology and include organizational awareness, data acumen, cross-functional collaboration, decision-making, willingness to adopt new technology, financial acumen, and more. With the growing importance of agile and product-centric delivery, project managers must bridge organizational silos and strategically maximize business value, making these skills essential.
While machines can handle many technical aspects of project management, the uniquely human qualities of relationship building and stakeholder management will remain crucial. These skills are central to the success of project managers in the next generation.
Gartner has also identified three critical roles project managers can play: the Teacher, the Fixer, and the Orchestrator. These roles adapt to organizations' evolving needs, providing support in areas such as digital transformation, delivery efficiency, and cross-functional coordination.
To ensure project managers are equipped to excel in this new era, organizations must invest in training and development initiatives that focus on the ten next-generation skills. These skills underscore the human aspects of project management, emphasizing the importance of sound judgment, decision-making, and the ability to make a lasting impact through coaching and relationship building.

🌎 Ready to reshape the world of work? Prioritizing human outcomes is the key! 🀝

In a boundaryless world, organizations must aim for collective aspirations by creating impact not only within their business but also in the broader society. The Deloitte 2023 Global Human Capital Trends survey shows that purpose, diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability, and trust are top focus areas for over 80% of organizations. πŸ“ˆπŸ’Ό

πŸ”· Here's how they're doing it:
1️⃣ Taking bold action for equitable outcomes: Shift from just measuring diversity to achieving equitable outcomes in talent access, development, and promotion. Hold organizations accountable for their contribution to societal goals. 🌐πŸ’ͺ
2️⃣ Advancing the human element of sustainability: Blur the boundary between an organization and society, focusing on sustainability with observable outcomes. Hardwire sustainability into the workforce and work itself. 🌿πŸ‘₯
3️⃣ Elevating the focus on human risk: Expand the perspective of human risks beyond compliance to address a broad set of risks influenced by and affecting humans. Ensure all executives understand and act on these risks for long-term viability. πŸš€πŸ“Š

The shift towards prioritizing human outcomes is transforming the workplace, creating a positive impact on both organizations and society. Let's embrace this change and work together for a better future! πŸ™ŒπŸ’¬

Cocreation in the Workplace: Building a Brighter Future Together! πŸš€πŸŒŸ

In the ever-evolving world, organizations and workers must join hands to navigate the path ahead. It's time to cocreate new rules, boundaries, and relationships, leaving behind outdated notions of control. πŸ™ŒπŸ”„

πŸš€ Here's why it's essential:

🌐 Negotiating worker data: Data ownership is evolving. The line between worker and organizational data ownership is fading, giving rise to discussions about workforce data, its transparency, and the mutual benefits it offers as data takes on the role of a new "currency." πŸ’ΎπŸ”„
🀝 Harnessing worker agency: Workers want more than traditional models can offer. Leverage their motivation for meaningful work, flexible workplaces, and personalized career paths. Embrace their agency for mutual benefits. πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ
🌈 Unlocking the workforce ecosystem: The value of diverse workforce ecosystems is immense. Adapt to the real-world talent pool, including gig workers and freelancers, to supercharge growth, innovation, and agility. 🌟🀝
The Deloitte 2023 Global Human Capital Trends survey (link in Comments) shows that organizations cocreating with workers experience amazing results - highly engaged workforces, innovation, and effective change response. πŸ“ˆπŸ’‘

But here's the challenge - only 19% are ready for data ownership, 17% for worker agency, and 16% for workforce ecosystems. Let's bridge this readiness gap and unleash the potential of cocreation! πŸ“ŠπŸ’ͺ

🌟 Ready to revolutionize your workplace? 🌍 Embrace the mindset of a researcher! 🧐

In today's ever-evolving work landscape, it's crucial to think like a researcher. Since the boundaries of work have essentially been removed, how people work is being reimagined. πŸš€ In fact, in Deloitte's "2023 Global Human Capital Trends (link in Comments) survey data reveals that 59% of respondents are focusing on reimagination - a 2x increase from pre-pandemic levels." πŸ“ˆ

πŸ”— Here's how you can make a difference:

1️⃣ Navigate the end of jobs: Rethink roles and tasks, prioritize skills, and empower workers to excel beyond traditional boundaries. πŸ› οΈπŸ‘₯
2️⃣ Power human impact with technology: Embrace tech to enhance human and team performance. Discover innovative ways to merge technology and humanity. πŸ€–πŸ€
3️⃣ Activate the future of the workplace: Forget about "where," and think about "how" work is done. Adapt to digital advancements and redefine your concept of a workplace. πŸ’πŸ’»

Thinking like a researcher means being curious, adaptable, and open to change. πŸ”βœ¨ It's the key to staying ahead in the boundaryless world of work.

Continuing the discussion about , we reference the report, "Deloitte 2023 Global Human Capital Trends: New fundamentals for a boundaryless world". The report states:

"10,000 respondents in this year’s Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends survey said their greatest barrier to achieving organizational outcomes is being overwhelmed 😰 by too many changes at once...organizations and workers should challenge prior assumptions and adopt a new set of fundamentals built for a dynamic, boundaryless world rather than the stable, compartmentalized one we are leaving behind."

"These new fundamentals require organizations and workers to frame the challenge differently:
πŸ€” πŸ” THINKING LIKE A RESEARCHER in how they approach their business and workforce strategies...
🀝 COCREATING THEIR RELATIONSHIP {with workers} in pursuit of new and evolving purpose, innovation, and reimagination...
πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ PRIORITIZING HUMAN OUTCOMES and approaching strategies from a human lensβ€”for humans and by humans."

Let's explore: How to Think Like a Researcher

πŸ“š Researchers dig deep, ask questions, and explore possibilities. They're not afraid to challenge the status quo! πŸ’‘

Here are three simple steps to think like a researcher:
1️⃣ Curiosity: Ask questions, lots of them! πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Engage your workers in meaningful dialogue to uncover the issues and challenges.
2️⃣ Evidence-based: Make decisions based on data and facts, not assumptions. πŸ“ŠπŸ“ˆ After collecting your workers' insights, pull data to help support their claims before making changes. If data doesn't exist, find a way to collect it.
3️⃣ Open-mindedness: Embrace diverse perspectives and be willing to adapt. πŸŒπŸ’¬ Everyone is unique. Go for the 80/20 rule up front and build in ways to address unique circumstances when they occur.

Thinking like a researcher can revolutionize the way you approach workforce challenges and opportunities. Give it a try! πŸ’ͺπŸ”¬

A recent poll we conducted indicated that are the number one concern that companies are facing. To help solve this problem, it's critically important to consider what employees are thinking.

A recent survey conducted by PwC (link attached) showed the following:

1. Transform or die: Many employees don't think their current their company will be around in 10 years if they don't change.

2. Employees are restless: Even though the Great Resignation is supposed to be over, more employees are considering leaving now than last year.

3. Financial hardships increase: We all know about inflation!

4. Skills inequity on the rise: Workers without specialized training are also more likely to be facing financial challenges - a downward spiral.

5. Workers aren’t afraid of AI: Many workers believe AI will help them at work.
