I haven’t been sharing much studio stuff on here lately and honestly I haven’t been working on much myself the last 6 months. Through the pandemic I have had one consistent student who has been making incredible progress! From drawing and designing her own fabric to learning the complicated ins and outs of bag making she is almost finished with the construction of her own custom backpack! 🎒 I am so proud of her progress and love watching her confidence (and patience with me) grow every week.

Project complete! My favorite part of teaching is seeing the confidence grow in my students as they learn new skills and admire their own finished projects. 🧵 ✂️

Read the news with tears in my eyes. She gave us so much until her last breath. We must continue her fight. 💔

Due to covid, like most things, my classes that usually happen all summer had to be cancelled. The last two weeks I have dipped my toe back in to teaching and had a couple one-on-one learn to sew lessons. My student requested a first project that was both new to my beginner curriculum and timely. I am so proud of her finished mask. 😷 🧵

I finished my block in remembrance of John Crawford III just in the knick of (Pacific) time. It was an honor to be a part of this remembrance quilt project. I am anxious to see them all come together. It will be overwhelming.

Got everything cut out and I’m starting to stitch things in place. [see previous post for project details.]

I have posted before about volunteering with Social Justice Sewing Academy and getting to be a small part of the amazing work they do. Typically my contributions to these projects is behind the scenes and includes assembly and embellishment with hand stitching on quilt blocks designed and made by other people. This project is different. This time we were given a name of a Black life that was cut short by police brutality and added to a long list of hashtags to bring to life and memorialize in a block that will be quilted together with many others. This time it was a much more emotional task. I was given the name of John Crawford III who was shot and killed inside the Beavercreek, Ohio Walmart.

I have been overwhelmed at starting this block both because I am in awe of the other volunteer artists who have been posting their beautiful progress and because of the massive responsibility I feel to honor John and his family.

It seems fitting to finally get the courage to post a progress photo today as it is the sixth anniversary of his unnecessary and tragic death.
