For some this is a 3-day holiday weekend. For others it's just another Monday in February. For marketing guru's it has become an infamous "Presidents Day" sale opportunity. Historically, the intention of the holiday was to honor George Washington's birthday, February 22nd. As time progressed, the day included honoring Abraham Lincoln's February 12th birthdate.
The date would not become a federal holiday until 1879, as President Rutherford B Hayes signed the date into law. Fast forward to around 1968 when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed into legislation that moved the holiday to the 3rd Monday in February. Things don't move quick on Capitol Hill, so it wasn't until 1971 that the date become effective. Now all of the Presidents are honored on this date.
So, whether you are celebrating the day off, buying furniture or simply slogging along - Happy President's Day!
