An Open Letter of Profound Gratitude to Attorney Clyde Bennett II
This letter extends profound gratitude to Attorney Clyde Bennett II. With his education, experience, and credentials, he could have chosen any legal path. Yet, every day, he chooses to stand with defendants who might otherwise lack superior representation to face the justice system.
His work is not without sacrifice. He has endured pro bono burdens, online criticism, vandalism, questions about his integrity, and threats to his safety. Yet he remains relentless in his pursuit of fairness and equity.
His efforts in reducing bail for his clients must be in the millions by now, keeping fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters with their families and in their jobs. His determination to ensure fair sentencing has returned hundreds of years of freedom to communities. His insistence that prosecutors prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt has protected countless lives, strengthened accountability, and improved policing.
In the wake of the arrests associated with the Downtown Incident on July 26, Attorney Bennett stepped in when excessive charges and bail left Black defendants sitting in jail. His advocacy secured equitable treatment, preventing uneasiness in our community and saving political careers.
Attorney Bennett is more than a lawyer. He is a guardian of justice, a protector of families, and a quiet peacemaker for the community. His sacrifices, courage, and determination are seen and deeply appreciated.
