The IRS has been marinating in controversy for the past four years with the Biden administration attempting to hire 80,000 new agents to audit taxpayers while installing a soak-the-rich commissioner to run the agency. With the Trump administration now in charge, the sense of whiplash is almost palpable.

The Trump tax cuts need to be renewed, but not until Elon Musk’s DOGE team finishes its review of government spending. If President Trump wants to build a lasting high-integrity budgeting system, it’s got to be done right, and that means figuring out what the government actually needs to spend before setting out a tax plan to take care of the revenue side.

Their messaging sounds increasingly political, and high-income taxpayers would be foolish to ignore what they’re saying: the IRS plans more audits of successful Americans to force them to pay more taxes.
