Mark’s Monthly Pour: Rioja Reserva

Fall calls for a w**e with enough structure for a slow dinner but enough balance to keep the conversation going. A Rioja Reserva is a great match for roasted mushrooms, pork tenderloin or a simple board of aged cheese.

My rule for w**e is similar to my rule for a good plan: complexity is welcome, confusion is not. What are you pouring this fall?

Medicare Open Enrollment begins today and runs through Dec. 7. Even if you were satisfied with your coverage this year, it is worth reviewing what may change next year—including premiums, prescription coverage and provider networks.

Health care is also part of retirement income planning. A coverage change can affect more than your doctor visits; it can affect your monthly cash flow.

Open Enrollment Open Enrollment happens from October 15 – December 7 and is the time each year when you can make changes to your coverage. The changes you make during Open Enrollment are effective January 1 of next year (the plan must get your enrollment request by December 7). Your options during...

Retirement is not one finish line. It is a series of decisions with different clocks.

Your last paycheck, Medicare eligibility, Social Security claiming age and required minimum distributions may all begin at different times. Treating them as one event can create gaps that are hard to see until income changes.

The better question is not only “When can I retire?” It is “How will each phase work together?”

A convincing message is not the same thing as a legitimate message.

If an email or text creates urgency, asks for personal information or tells you to move money, pause before acting. Contact the company using a phone number or website you already trust—not the information in the message.

A good fall weekend does not need much: crisp air, a trail under your feet and somewhere local to eat afterward.

After more than 30 years serving families in this part of Ohio, I still appreciate how much there is to enjoy close to home. What local trail, restaurant or fall tradition should be on everyone’s list this month?

October is when “I’ll handle it before year-end” needs to become a date on the calendar.

Required minimum distributions, charitable gifts, Roth conversions and investment gains or losses can all have Dec. 31 implications. Waiting until the last week of the year leaves less room to coordinate with your financial advisor and tax professional.

What is one financial task you want off your list before the holidays arrive?

October is Financial Planning Month, but I have never believed planning belongs in a single month. The real value comes from keeping your strategy connected as life changes.

Investments, taxes, insurance, estate documents and retirement income should not operate in separate lanes. A decision in one area can create a ripple effect everywhere else.

If your financial life feels more like a collection of accounts than one coordinated strategy, let’s have a conversation.
