I was fortunate to be on a panel with my friends Rico Grant (founder of ) and at the conference on an amazing topic - (Full video link in bio)

Our theme was “Radical Transparency” using case studies. Here are some of the many highlights from our session:

- : We analyzed two companies, Nike vs. , to articulate what authentic means to us, i.e. Authentic allies don’t ask us to conform, are unwavering in their support, and stay consistent.

- No more : The long-standing legacy of separating “successful” minorities from "those others" is no longer valid - and we want companies to acknowledge that all of us have similar views, regardless of our socioeconomic status or academic achievements.

- : Expect us to support each other since having one seat at the table for "Women and Minorities" is no longer sufficient - Expect us to not just help others follow our lead but also propel our peers to join us at the table.

- changes: We talked about Starbucks and how incremental changes inadvertently fail - its time for systemic, seismic changes in all aspects of business, from products to investors to internal policies. We want bold changes similar to how changed Broadway.

D&I is an internal effort that companies leverage to encourage work environments that inspire diversity of representation and thought, that promote and celebrate inclusivity, and that provide equitable opportunities to all.

On the flip side, multicultural marketing is an external effort for a corporation to promote and sell products or services, including market research and advertising to one or more audiences of a specific ethnic background.

It truly benefits everyone when business leaders recognize the differences and act on them.

Over the past few months, we have witnessed an uptick on the debate around the importance of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) for Corporate America, and this is excellent news.

A huge gap remains between what organizations are saying and doing to promote inclusion and the outcomes we’re seeing for many black workers and managers.

If leaders want to walk their talk, they must spearhead much more meaningful change. Instead of undervaluing and squandering black talent, they must recognize the resilience, robust sense of self, and growth mindset that, studies show, African-American people — as one of the most historically oppressed groups in the United States — bring to the table.

They should work even harder to seek out and support them, from entry-level recruitment to CEO succession.

Challenging as the work environment can be (particularly in trading), the frustrations voiced by women in this article reveal an industry sorely in need of an overhaul. So much can be done to decrease the microaggressions, to improve the pay and to provide mentors and sponsors that help candidates succeed.

“It becomes very tiring and exhausting for women who are at senior levels within the industry to continually be faced with the everyday microaggressions. But it’s also the daily grind that wears women down."

Today, 4 out of every 10 businesses in the U.S. are owned by women, a remarkable, growing trend.

Even better, the changing demographics of small businesses don’t just involve women.

A 2017 report by The Business Journals showed there were more than 11 million minority-owned businesses in operation in the U.S., nearly double the number from 10 years earlier.
