In this installment of Gray & Pape's Travel Recs, Midwest Archaeologist Jason Kovacs gives a glowing recommendation of the Crystal River Archaeological Park! Located in Crystal River, FL, the state park preserves and educates visitors about six precontact mound structures and the people who used them. The mound complex served as both a significant economic and cultural site for indigenous communities all along the Gulf for 1,600 years.

Please join us in wishing Lindsay Gundler a fond farewell. She started with Gray & Pape as an Archaeology Field Tech and became full-time staff in 2018 as Midwest Logistics Coordinator. In that role she moved all the people to all the places with all the equipment, which is no easy task. In 2025, she transitioned to the History/Architecture team where she developed her architectural history skill set: learning the beginning phases of the Section 106 process, taking architectural photos, and exploring various research tools. Lindsay is moving on to the next chapter, pursing a masters in Public History at the University of Cincinnati.

Congratulations to Lindsay, and best wishes!

Our July Employee of the Month is Jacob Hamill! Jacob is recognized for his cooperation, positive attitude, cost/time saving measures, and for special tasks and projects

Since he joined us last year, Jacob Hamill has been an outstanding addition to the Northeast office. Jacob is an invaluable field supervisor whose leadership, organizational, and technical skills are much appreciated. This is especially true for our larger projects, such as an expansive project that crosses Vermont and Massachusetts. Jacob has skills out of the field too, providing much needed and excellent assistance with site interpretation and reporting. He embodies calm in the chaos. Thanks to Jacob for all his very hard work and effort!

Historic Buildings Can Offer More Than Character — They Can Offer Significant Tax Benefits. For our next installment of "Gray & Pape Travel Recs", we want to give a shoutout to the National Quilt Museum! Archaeologists Jocelyn Connolly and Amelia Bidwell were blown away by the incredible quilts on exhibit when they were in Paducah, KY.

Welcome to our new series "Gray & Pape Travel Recs"! 'Tis the season for vacations and travelling, so we're highlighting cultural destinations we've worked at or visited while on projects. Our first travel rec is Old Sturbridge Village located in Sturbridge, MA. Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor history museum depicting a New England town in the early 19th century.

The Northeast Office celebrated their 2025 holiday season at the Village, exploring the 40 historic buildings and learning from in-costume interpreters on site. The Village has seasonal activities year-round and has experiences for visitors of all ages.

Continuing with our run of "Architectural Historians in Uncommon Places" theme... Last week, Gray & Pape architectural historians were in Grand Rapids, Michigan, conducting documentation and monitoring of the demolition of a low-head dam in the Grand River, which runs through downtown Grand Rapids.

The dam's are being demolished to improve the habitat for native fish, and support increased fish passage and greater ecological resilience. In addition, the broader scope Grand River Restoration will expand access and create new recreation opportunities, support a healthier river ecosystem, and assist in river-related economic vitality.

Since 2016, he has been investigating the archaeology and history of Houston’s Memorial Park. His presentation will talk about his archaeological work in the park, in particular the archaeology of WWI Camp Logan.
