If you care about public transparency in development projects and historic places, contact your representatives and tell them to vote NO. The historic preservation provisions of this bill are undefined and claim to fix a problem that doesn't exist. The reality will be more lawsuits, not less, and a public shut out of discussions concerning public lands and historic spaces. Between now and the planned Senate vote on November 9, Gray & Pape will be posting and sharing other’s posts that highlight the importance of NHPA, Section 106, consultation, and how we can help ensure the continued protection of our heritage sites alongside responsible development.

October is Texas Archaeology Month and Friday, October 17 is International Archaeology Day. Staff from the Gray & Pape Houston office will be at the Houston Museum of Natural Science to celebrate. Gray & Pape is excited to announce the launch of a new Caribbean Regional office. Senior leadership of the new office will be provided by Ray Pasquariello as Vice President, Zachary Beier as Branch Manager, Carla de la Rosa as Principal Investigator, and Maxwell Lopez as Senior Principal Investigator. They will be working alongside a growing team of locally based field staff.

The team brings deep regional knowledge, trusted relationships, and a strong work ethic paired with Gray & Pape’s nearly four decades of cultural resource management experience. With an initial focus on Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we look forward to building new opportunities across the Caribbean with a commitment to quality archaeology, research, preservation, and heritage stewardship. The new Caribbean office is already working on exciting projects and is looking forward to building on established relationships and forging new ones.

Last night, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval was the guest speaker at the Heritage Ohio conference. He gave a fantastic speech about the value of historic preservation as a driver of economic development in Cincinnati. Gray & Pape is a sponsor of this fantastic conference.

Congratulations to our architectural historians Cooper Shields and Emma Lineberger on their recent promotions! Cooper is now an Architectural Historian Principal Investigator out of our Midwest region. Emma is now an Architectural Historian II based in our Mid-Atlantic region.

Down the street from Gray & Pape’s Houston office is an important piece of Hispanic American history and an incredible example cultural heritage preservation in action. The Council 60 Clubhouse was built as a private home in 1907, but in 1955 it became the de facto headquarters for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s the Clubhouse was the nerve center for efforts to desegregate schools, juries, and housing; and organize educational and job training programs for Spanish speakers.

The building had been empty since 2013 and heavily damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Since then, local community groups, the National Trust, American Express, and others have come together to rehabilitate the structure which is now listed as a “National Treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a Protected Landmark by the City of Houston.
