Recently, one of Gray & Pape's architectural historians got to experience a setting our maritime archaeologists are far more accustomed to—the open ocean!

A small journey to an island for some fieldwork saw them trade land for the water, but just for an hour. It's always exciting to see where our work takes our employees!

One of the best parts of the work we do is the strange, out-of-the-way places we get to visit. While traveling between projects, Gray & Pape's VP of Growth and Innovation Mike Striker found himself driving past Carhenge just outside of Alliance, Nebraska, and stopped to snap a few pics.

We have the bittersweet task of announcing Holly Henderson's departure from Gray & Pape. Holly started with Gray & Pape in 2022 as an intern, and eventually served as both logistics coordinator and archaeologist in the Midwest Office. In every role, Holly has brought a positive attitude and a personable approach.

We will miss working with her and wish her well as she starts the University of Cincinnati's graduate program in Anthropology this fall.

Gray & Pape Architectural Historian Amy Borland will be attending the International Association for Preservation Technology's (APT) 2026 Annual Conference.

The conference is being held October 26-30 in Indianapolis. Scholarships for students, young professionals, underrepresented communities, or those with new perspectives end June 15, and the deadline for early bird registration is August 17.

Gray & Pape’s Jim Hughey and Michael Tuttle will be attending the 2026 North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH) conference in New Haven, CT, May 27-29. NASOH is one of the largest maritime heritage associations in the US, which supports maritime history, archaeology, heritage and studies. Will you be attending?

Katie Stefanic, M.A., is celebrating her fifth anniversary at Gray & Pape! She has over 8 years of experience in CRM and has worked all over the east coast, in Europe, Panama, and Mexico. She chairs our Underrepresented Communities Task Force which aims to find projects that highlight buildings, landscapes, and sites that are historically and culturally significant to traditionally underrepresented communities. Some of her favorite projects include documenting the American Battle Monuments Commission’s overseas WWI and WWII cemeteries, like the one at Normandy, France.

Gray & Pape is performing archaeological monitoring for a project at Devils Tower National Monument. For many Indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Crow, and Kiowa, Devils Tower National Monument is a sacred place deeply connected to traditional cultural practices, oral histories, and ceremonial use. Numerous Tribal Nations maintain enduring cultural and spiritual relationships with the Tower, which is known by Indigenous names such as Bear Lodge and Bear’s Tipi that reflect its significance within Native traditions.

We had a fabulous time at the SAAs in San Francisco! We were represented by our President Cinder Miller, and four of our top-notch archaeologists: Pat Trader, Michael Quennoz, Steph Miller and Alfredo Gonzalez.

We hope you were able to stop by and see Pat's presentation: “The Kreitzer Site: a transitional Yankeetown-Angel phase site, Ohio River Valley, southwestern, Indiana.” in the symposium “Beyond Compliance: Innovation and Impact in CRM Archaeology” on Saturday!

At the Council of Maritime Museum conference in Mystic, Connecticut the interaction between artifacts, context, exhibit design and interpretation is explored by museums, exhibit designers, archaeologists, and planning firms. Gray & Pape is excited to participate in conference sessions in support of our current and upcoming interpretation and heritage project work.
