October is National Children’s Health Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about environmental factors that can affect children. According to the U.S. EPA, children can be more vulnerable to pollutants than adults because of differences in biology and behavior, which can result in greater exposure or unique windows of susceptibility.

Both indoor and outdoor environmental quality can play an important role in protecting children’s health. Potential concerns can include mold and other biological contaminants, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, poor indoor air quality, and other environmental hazards. Outdoor air quality can also be a concern, particularly during wildfire smoke events and other conditions that can increase air pollution.

Fire Prevention Month, observed each October, encourages people to reduce the risk of fires at home, work, and school. While prevention is essential for protecting lives and property, a fire's effects can persist long after the flames are extinguished.

Many fire-related hazards are not immediately visible. Smoke and soot can spread throughout a structure, settling on surfaces and penetrating building materials, furnishings, and HVAC systems. Even small fires can leave behind contamination that impacts indoor environmental quality.

The growing use of lithium-ion batteries has introduced additional concerns. When these batteries ignite, they can burn intensely, reignite unexpectedly, and release toxic gases, heavy metals, and ultrafine particles that may contaminate indoor environments.

October is National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month, providing an opportunity to focus attention on the environmental conditions that impact the health, comfort, and productivity of building occupants. EMSL Analytical, Inc., one of North America's leading providers of IAQ testing services, encourages organizations and property owners to evaluate their indoor environments and address potential air quality concerns before they become larger issues.

As buildings continue to evolve to meet energy efficiency and sustainability goals, maintaining healthy indoor environments remains a critical consideration. To learn more about IAQ Testing with EMSL, visit https://lnkd.in/eEtKEBVe.

The growing global artificial intelligence and cloud computing demand is boosting a rapid increase in data centers buildings across the country. One common cause of equipment failure risks in these data centers is the existence of zinc whiskers.

Zinc whiskers are small, hair-like filaments of zinc. These filaments grow from zinc-coated metal surfaces including electrical components and mechanical hardware (such as nuts, bolts, washers, equipment racks, housings, and rails) or from zinc-plated underside of the raised-access floor tiles and the support structures commonly used in computer data centers. When present, the zinc whiskers can pass into the electronic hardware through vents and fans on the equipment. Then when inside of the equipment, the zinc whiskers can cause various electrical failures, ranging from intermittent to permanent short circuits.
