Breastfeeding tip for NICU moms: Every drop counts and here’s why.

If you are pumping for a baby in the NICU, it can feel discouraging when the amounts seem small. But here is what to remember: your colostrum, even just a few drops, is highly concentrated with antibodies and protective factors that help defend your baby and support early development.

Your body is still learning, and supply often increases over time with consistent pumping. The NICU team can use every drop you provide to deliver these powerful benefits.

Do not compare your output to anyone else. Your milk is made specifically for your baby. Keep going.

Why does the type of fortifier matter for your critically ill or preterm baby?

Your breast milk is incredible. It is made specifically for your baby. But premature babies often need extra calories and protein to grow. That is where a fortifier comes in.

Here is what many parents do not know:
Most fortifiers are made from cow milk. Only one brand is made from 100% human milk-based. Research shows that diets made entirely from human milk are associated with a lower risk of NEC, a serious intestinal condition.

If keeping your baby's diet 100% human milk matters to you, you can ask for Prolacta by name.

Your baby's gut is still developing. That matters more than you might think.

Premature babies have immature digestive systems. What they eat in those early weeks can make a real difference in their health outcomes.

Studies show that a diet made entirely from human milk is associated with a lower risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious intestinal condition that affects premature infants.

If your baby is in the NICU and needs fortification, there is an option made from 100% human milk instead of cow milk. You can ask your care team about it.

Important NICU Tip: Keep a notebook.

Write down the questions that come to you at 2 AM. Jot down what the doctors tell you during rounds. Track your baby's weight, feeding volumes, and milestones.

It helps you stay informed. It helps you remember what to ask. And it gives you something concrete to hold onto when everything feels uncertain.

You do not have to remember everything. Just write it down.

Meet Meredith, a Prolacta donor.

Meredith is a former elementary school teacher turned homeschooling mama of four daughters. She and her high school sweetheart have been married for 12 years.

She donates in honor of her niece, who was born prematurely at just 24 weeks and passed away after two days.

She was an overproducer with all four of her daughters but didn't find Tiny Treasures until after Clara was born. Since then, she's completed one full year of donating and is on track to do the same with Myra.

A new episode of The Incubator Podcast explores how human milk-based nutrition is being studied in vulnerable infants, featuring Prolacta’s Dr. Melinda Elliott alongside Professor Katsumi Mizuno.

The discussion highlights findings from the Mizuno trial conducted in Japan, including:
Growth outcomes
Feeding tolerance

This podcast offers a closer look at how research continues to inform care for premature babies in Japan and beyond.
