Deputy prevents attempted su***de at Multnomah Falls parking lot
A Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy prevented a woman from making a decision that could have cost her life. On Friday afternoon, August 4, Deputy Payne was approached by a Multnomah Falls parking lot attendant, who stated that a woman was sitting on the concrete divider adjacent to the fast lane, facing traffic. He reported that she was saying she wanted to harm herself. Deputy Payne walked in the direction of the woman, passing approximately 50 onlookers. As Deputy Payne approached the woman, she saw him and pushed off the concrete divider towards cars traveling on the freeway. As she pushed off, Deputy Payne reached out and grabbed the woman’s arm, preventing her from running into the traffic. Deputy Payne assisted her back over the divider and onto the embankment away from the freeway. He walked her over to his car, never letting go of the woman’s arm, to ensure she did not run back to the freeway. He radioed for an ambulance and placed the woman on a peace officer’s hold. When a person is placed on a POH, they receive a mental health and medical evaluation at a hospital.
When asked why Deputy Payne chose not to run to the woman, the former AMR lifeguard said he did not want her to see his urgency. He worried that it could have caused the woman to panic and make the decision to run into traffic before he was able to get to her.
We want to commend Deputy Payne for his thoughtful actions and the way he approached the situation throughout the entirety of the event. Because of his actions, the woman is alive and received needed care.
