These are in extremely high numbers currently! Lots of people are experiencing them on the inside of their homes. Here’s how to help control/reduce them from the interior. Please share!
Midges (Gnats) & March Flies
Midges and March flies are seasonal flying insects that originate outdoors and are attracted to lights, moisture, and favorable weather conditions. They do not breed inside homes and are considered nuisance pests rather than structural pests. During periods of high activity, large numbers may gather on the exterior of a building and occasionally enter through open doors, windows, damaged screens, attic vents, or small gaps around utility penetrations.
The best way to reduce these insects from entering your home is through exclusion and exterior lighting management. Keep doors and windows closed whenever possible, repair damaged window and door screens, seal gaps around windows, doors, siding, and utility penetrations, and ensure weather stripping is in good condition. Reducing outdoor lighting during peak activity or switching to warm-colored “bug” LED bulbs can also help minimize attraction. Eliminating standing water around the property and maintaining proper drainage may reduce nearby midge breeding areas when applicable.
Because these insects migrate from surrounding outdoor environments, no pesticide treatment can completely prevent them from occurring or guarantee they will not enter the home. Pest control treatments can help reduce insect activity around the structure but cannot eliminate insects that continuously fly in from nearby breeding sites. Seasonal increases are a natural occurrence and typically decline as environmental conditions change.
