I am a husband, father, electrician and speaker. I spent several years traveling and working various jobs in construction; such as a laborer, equipment operator, Lineman, Project Superintendent and electrician. I eventually went to work as a union maintenance electrician for a local pulp and paper mill, no more travel, a good income and stability. What every hard working family provider is looking

for. I was a healthy 6’3” 240 # man who loved his work, and his attitude was always about getting the job done. But one day my life changed while working around a 12,500 volt 200 amp overhead power line. However I am here today to share with you how hard work and dedication to your job should be a focus, but not your only focus. I want others to understand that if you don’t take safety seriously; your life could resemble mine in less than a second. I now travels the US sharing with others how my life changed in a matter of one second and the reality of how it really can happen to you if you choose not to take safety seriously!

For the last 2 weeks, some of our ISMPs had the opportunity to travel Iowa to train a utility company on our services. Through this experience, they met another incredible presenter, Gary Norland. Here is a picture of Gary and one of our ISMPs, Sara. Gary travels the U.S. educating lineman about the impact a workplace injury can have on friends, family, and coworkers. Check out garynorland.com and his page, Gary Norland Safety Presentations. Gary, thank you for sharing your powerful story and sharing the week with us!

After years of downturn and cutbacks, leaders are likely to face a different problem in the coming year: How do they keep their people safe with the comeback of oil prices?

This problem is two-edged. First, and most important, how do leaders prevent serious and fatal events while rebuilding the workforce? Second, how can leaders make safety performance a competitive advantage after years of erosive cost-cutting?

Jim Spigener from DEKRA Insight discusses how, as oil prices make a comeback, leaders who don't get in front of the upswing and include safety in the rebuild will likely find themselves in a losing game of catch-up.
