Why Globe Turnout Gear Seam Construction Matters:
How does seam construction impact turnout gear quality and performance?
Stitches per inch (SPI) play an important role in turnout gear durability. Globe garments are constructed with 8–10 SPI, compared with some competitors that average 6–8 SPI. In-house laboratory testing has shown that higher stitch density consistently delivers greater seam strength. With some lightweight outer shell fabrics, the fabric itself can tear before the seam fails—a sign that the seam is stronger than the material it holds together.
More stitches per inch create stronger, longer-lasting seams that better withstand the demands of the fireground. Globe also follows strict construction methods for structural seams. If a thread breaks or a bobbin runs out during sewing, the entire row of stitching is replaced rather than repaired or restarted. Structural seams are joined only where stitching begins or ends.
