Christ for pardon, Christ for power, Christ for you! Jesus Christ came to seek and save the lost, it’s the sick that need a doctor, not the healthy. If the impression of christianity you have is that christians are perfect, or faultless, or better than anyone else, then the impression of christianity you have is wrong. (Whether or not you claim to be one) We all fail to meet God’s perfect standard (His Law) and so we need someone else to do it for us, that’s Jesus. He takes our sin and gives us his righteousness (the Gospel). He is for you, you can be forgiven.

Latin phrase Friday. Vox Scriptura Vox Dei! The voice of scripture is the voice of God. Basically, the Bible is God’s voice. We can talk for ever about translations, accuracy, and criticisms but the idea is that in the Bible God is telling us what He wants us to know about Himself and the path to salvation. It is sufficient for those things. It is not sufficient for, or meant to be, everything you need to know about everything. People that claim things like “if it’s not in the Bible I don’t believe it” have misunderstood this, a simple illustration, when your car breaks down do you open the Haynes manual or the Bible? The Bible is Gods voice telling us how to be reconcieled to Himself through Jesus Christ the Righteous. “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets He explained to them all the things concerning Himself in all the scriptures.” Luke 24:27 The voice of the scriptures is the voice of God, and it’s all about Jesus.

Latin Phrase Friday is back after I missed last week. This week we are continuing with the “5 Solas” with Sola Scriptura or, Scripture Alone. All this means is that the Bible is the divine word of God and the ultimate revelation of God’s words. This is often confused with or charactured as ‘Solo Scriptura’ which says there is no truth outside of the Bible period. That’s silly. It’s not ‘the Bible versus everything else’ but when something doesn’t align with the Bible, we side with the Bible. Pretty simple. The historical evidence for the Bible is pretty overwhelming if you do some research. To throw it out as unreliable would mean you have to throw out everything we know of the ancient world. You can interpret it differently than historical christianity does, but you’d be hard pressed to discount it entirely.

Latin Phrase Friday is upon us. Foedus Gratiae. Simply, the Covenant of Grace. While we were still sinners Christ died for us. People can (and have) argued for decades over social issues, the existence of God, how life got to be here, and a million other things. Two people can be 100% sure of two totally opposite things, and that’s ok. But it all boils down to one thing, what do you say about Jesus? A real person in history that you can really research, that really claimed to be God incarnate on your behalf. All that other stuff comes after this, weather people act like that or not. A real man really lived, really claimed to be God, really died, and really rose from the dead so that YOU and I can be reconciled to God, FOR FREE. This is all researchable, you can collect and analyze this data yourself. You can enter into this free covenant of Grace. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Latin phrase Friday! This is on a license plate, Laus Deo and it just means “Praise be to God”. For me it’s a reminder that my situations or emotions don’t affect the truth of who God is in relation to me. All through the Bible people are mad at God, so they yell at Him, they question Him, and they accuse Him. And that’s ok. Some of those people are hailed as giants of the faith and men after Gods own heart. Praise be to God, even when I’m so mad at Him I can’t stand it. Don’t ever deny yourself emotions, but don’t ever rely completely on them either. Feelings don’t change facts, they inform us about them. And I have a really hard time keeping that straight because I am emotion driven to the max. So laus Deo reminds me that even when my emotions are telling me something, stop and remember the fact of who God is in relation to me. A good and gracious savior, we love BECAUSE He first loved us, not so that He would love us.

Latin phrase Friday! This week’s phrase is Sola Gratia and it means Grace Alone. You may notice it looks a lot like last weeks painting and that’s because it’s on the back of the same panel. That’s because these two solas very much go hand in hand. Last week we talked about faith and what that is, the three parts of it (knowledge, ascent, trust). What grace alone essentially says is that no one can get to that third and final stage of faith (trust) without God granting the grace to do so. You cannot muster up the faith, you cannot work hard to gain enough faith, it must be given to you on no account of your own. Since no one is deserving of it, the fact salvation is granted at all is a gracious act. The faith by which we are justified is our faith, but only because our Creator first gave it to us. All those to whom faith has been granted WILL come to exercise it. Regeneration precedes faith, not vice versa. So, the knowledge- Jesus was a real person in history that was fully human and fully God, really lived a perfect life and really died paying the penalty of our sin. Ascent- this reality of history is FOR YOU. Trust- ask God for the gracious gift of faith to believe that.
