Fourteen years. One watershed restored.
In December 2011, RES Coal was issued our Shaw #2 Mining Permit to remine a site scarred by decades of legacy mining — abandoned deep mines, unreclaimed spoil piles, and open highwalls left behind long before modern environmental standards existed.
Mining was completed in 2024. Final planting wrapped up in July 2025. This flyover shows what the site looks like today.
Over the life of this operation, we:
🔹 Reclaimed 72.9 acres of abandoned mine spoils
🔹 Daylighted and eliminated 201.8 acres of legacy abandoned deep mines
🔹 Reclaimed 8,910 linear feet of abandoned highwalls
🔹 Brought a public water line to the town of Croft
But the number we're most proud of flows downstream. Surveyor Run — a tributary of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River — was heavily degraded by pre-law mining. When we began baseline monitoring in 2006, the stream was net acidic, with elevated iron, manganese, and aluminum.
Today, Surveyor Run is net alkaline. Manganese and aluminum loading have dropped by more than 60%, and pH has climbed from the low 5s to consistently above 7.
This is what remining does: it uses a modern, regulated mining operation to fix the damage of the past — at no cost to taxpayers. The coal paid for the cleanup.
No highwalls. No spoil piles. A healthier stream feeding the Susquehanna. That's the legacy we intend to leave on every site we touch.
