People with Relator build the kind of relationships most leaders spend their whole careers trying to manufacture. But here is what nobody tells you. The same depth that makes your closest relationships extraordinary can make everyone else feel invisible. Swipe to see the 5 signs your Relator is working against you.

Harmony is one of the most powerful themes in the room, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. People who lead with Harmony are often the reason the team is still intact, still moving, and still able to work together when the pressure is on. They find common ground when others are too dug in to look for it, and they make it possible for people with very different opinions to stay in the same conversation long enough to actually get something done.

But here is what nobody sees. Every time they stay quiet to keep the peace, it costs them something. And over time, little by little, they stop believing their opinion matters, and when that happens, they disappear from the conversation entirely, not because they were pushed out, but because they decided it was pointless to stay in it.

People with Responsibility are the ones others count on. They follow through when others fade, they keep their word when it would be easier not to, and when they say they will do something, it gets done.

You can only carry so much before something starts to slip. And when it does, it is not just a missed deadline. It is your reputation.

Swipe through to see if your Responsibility is working for you or against you.

Achiever is one of the most celebrated CliftonStrengths themes. It creates drive, productivity, persistence, and accomplishment.

But every strength has a shadow side.

When Achiever is unchecked, you can find yourself saying yes too often, struggling to rest, judging yourself and others by output, confusing activity with progress, and carrying a pace that is difficult to sustain.

The goal is not to use your strengths less.

The goal is to use them wisely.

A healthy Achiever produces results.

An unhealthy Achiever produces exhaustion.

The difference matters.

Which of these resonates with you the most?

By the time I noticed, there was blood all over. And my girls were responsible!

I was getting ready to leave for vacation and needed to shave before we hit the road. I went to grab my razor from the shower and the handle was gone. All that was left was the razor head. My girls took the handle for themselves.

Now it makes sense why they told me they liked guys’ razors more than girls’ …they took mine!

So, like any normal human being, I grabbed the razor head and started shaving. My finger was guiding it perfectly. Who needs a handle?

I am a genius.

As I was shaving my neck, I noticed a red drop hit the sink. I looked at my neck. No cut. I figured the water just rinsed off whatever small cut it was…so I kept going.

Another drop. I paused. Looked again. Nothing…so I kept going. By this time, I know that you are probably questioning my judgment! Looking back…so do I.

Quickly, it was more than just a few drops covering the sink. I pulled the razor away to look at my neck and noticed my finger.

Apparently the opposite side of razor blades are also sharp.

What was crazy was, my finger was cut and I did not even feel it. Not until I stopped shaving and started cleaning things up.

I am sitting here writing this with a bandaid on my finger. And then it hit me.

Isn’t that what it is like when we use our strengths without being careful and intentional?

I am a CliftonStrengths coach. Yes, we talk about what we do best…where we are strong…it is literally in the name. But over a decade of coaching I have noticed that some of the biggest problems leaders face are not their weaknesses. The problems are their strengths…overused…without consideration of how they work in relationship with others. Causing damage they cannot see because they are still getting results.

Just like my razor. It was doing its job. I was getting a great shave, but it was also quietly cutting me somewhere I was not even looking.

Over the next few posts I want to walk through specific strengths, what they look like when they are working, and what can go wrong when we are not using them well or intentionally.

Stay with me. This one might be closer to home than you think.
