We are always working on our professional development to bring the latest in college admissions information to our students. Today I visited Connecticut College and participated in an admissions session with counselor-specific information for our IECA group. Upon return to the conference center, I sat in on a session examining applicant case studies for performing arts students and a session with Vanderbilt, Skidmore and Villanova admissions reps discussing how they evaluate the activities section of the Common Application. Very informative!

To do standardized testing or not do standardized testing - that is the question. If you are a rising high school sophomore-junior, me saith - start preping if you want to maximize college options.

While standardized testing will be a college-to-college decision for years to come, there are and will continue to be colleges that will require a SAT or ACT score. Some test-optional institutions will revert back to requiring testing. I found this nugget in the UNC-Wilmington website. UNC-Wilmington is currently test optional.

"For first-year students applying after 2024, a standardized test score is required for admission to the university."

This doesn't mean they can't change the policy, but it indicates where they want to go with testing. Considering many students have learning loss as a result of Covid, test scores, generally, are down. Consider academic tutoring (as early as the need is identified) and/or test prep before mid-junior year. College in 3-2-1 offers a free ACT and SAT diagnostic test for all sophomores and juniors who enroll in one of our packages to determine a "baseline" score and identify which test may be better suited to the student so they can focus on just one.
