Let’s dive into the CMA collection! During our closure, we are featuring art objects via the museum's online collection. Today, we bring the action in “Stag at Sharkey’s" by American George Bellows. His 1909 painting portrays a sport still local and private, not yet the national event it becomes after World War I. cma.org/art/1133.1922

For our we are going way back, back to the Hellenistic period for this Amethyst necklace with butterfly pendant. In the collection of the necklace - made of gold, amethyst, chalcedony, emerald, rock crystal, pearl, and colored glass - was originally made in Greece but discovered in 1891 in a tomb near Olbia, Parutino, Ukraine.

Amethyst is the birthstone for February and Ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness and helped them to keep a balanced mindset.
