Most "SEO experts" are just good at selling SEO.
They're not good at SEO.
Here's how you can tell:
Red Flags:
🚩 They guarantee #1 rankings
(Nobody can guarantee rankings. Google's algorithm changes constantly.)
🚩 They promise results in 30 days
(Real SEO takes 3-6 months minimum.)
🚩 They can't explain their strategy in plain English
(If it sounds like jargon-heavy voodoo, they're hiding something.)
🚩 They focus only on rankings, not leads/revenue
(Rankings without conversions are useless.)
🚩 They use "proprietary methods"
(Translation: sketchy tactics that might get you penalized.)
🚩 They never mention your business goals
(SEO should serve outcomes, not exist for its own sake.)
What GOOD SEO looks like:
✅ Transparent explanation of strategy
✅ Focus on your specific business goals
✅ Realistic timelines (3-6 months for momentum)
✅ Emphasis on sustainable, white-hat methods
✅ Regular reporting on leads/revenue, not just rankings
✅ Willingness to educate you, not gatekeep
The controversial part:
A lot of local businesses waste money on automated directory submissions, generic AI blog posts, backlink schemes, and reports that only show rankings, while seeing zero actual growth.
The test:
Ask your SEO provider: "How many leads did we generate from organic search last month?"
If they can't answer that, what are you paying for?
Agree or disagree?
Marketing people: am I being too harsh?
Business owners: does this match your experience?
