Now that you know what to do before you start a fire and while the fire is burning, making sure you know how to stop your fire is important:

Properly disposing of wood after a fire involves ensuring it’s completely cool, separating ash from larger embers, placing everything in a metal container, wetting it down thoroughly with water to prevent reignition, and then taking it to a proper disposal site, using it for gardening (like raised beds or soil amendment), or arranging local pickup for usable wood. Never put hot ashes in plastic bins or near combustibles, as they can smolder and ignite for days.

Stay safe and warm this holiday season!

Our Firewood Bank Day in November was a huge success! Thanks to funding provided by Alliance for Green Heat, we were able to provide free scoops of wood to those in need in our community, and help keep them warm this season!

Our next Firewood Bank Day will be on December 20th from 9am-1pm! Free scoops of wood will be available to those in need - and any donations will be given to White County Family Connection in support of their White Christmas. We highly encourage local churches and non-profits to reach out to [email protected] ahead of time so we can prepare exactly what you may need!

We hope everyone is staying cozy and warm this holiday season! Now that you know what to do before lighting your fire, here are a few important reminders for while your fire is burning— and why they matter:

Never leave your fire unattended 🔥
Even a well-managed fire can shift unexpectedly. Staying nearby helps you catch flare-ups, falling logs, or sparks before they turn into a bigger problem.

Keep children and pets at a safe distance 🐾
Curious hands (or paws) can get too close without realizing the danger. Maintaining space prevents accidental burns and keeps everyone safe around the hearth.

Use a screen or cover 🪵
A screen helps stop sparks and embers from escaping the fireplace. This simple barrier can prevent burns, protect nearby furniture, and reduce the risk of accidental fires when you step away briefly.

We hope you continue to stay safe and enjoy the comfort of a crackling fire (with Southern Legacy Wood) this season!

Now that the holidays are in full swing, we want to help you stay safe and warm this season by reminding you of some fire safety tips!

To keep your home safe, always keep flammable items at least three feet from the fireplace, have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually by a professional, and make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

If you don’t take the right precautions before you light your fire, you could end up with a disaster on your hands. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen! 🪵🔥

Project Update

The White County and Hall County communities have been incredible in helping us transport firewood to the Asheville area.

A huge shoutout to Cleveland Wood Preserve , Matt Whitefield, Stuart Stovall, Michael Lawrence, Mountain Missions (Greg Bell and his convoy of seven trucks), Tyler Mixon (United Logistics), Owens Welding, Cochran Towing, City Plumbing, Peachtree Lumber, and many others.

We’ve successfully moved tons of ready-to-burn firewood to the hardest-hit areas. Amy Sins from Fill The Fill the Needs has done an amazing job coordinating all these deliveries from somewhere on the bayou in Louisiana.

I especially want to thank C**t Stovall my friend, business partner, and mentor. C**t has the strongest faith and convictions of anyone I know. He never seeks recognition (believing in the principle of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing). When I say, “we’ve done plenty,” he always responds with, “lets do more.” I truly appreciate his guidance.

Once we’ve shipped out all the wood, we’ll move on to Phase 2: Splitting the remaining cut and seasoned rounds here. We have a couple of large splitters, but we need more and some volunteers to help with the splitting. We’re ready with cord bags to fill and haulers to transport the wood.

Southern Legacy Wood Products is seeing a purpose it never knew it had through this adventure.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED
