Many people think networking is just exchanging business cards and talking shop. ๐ง But to use the words of BNI Founder Dr. Ivan Misner, if you remove the personal connection from the equation, you severely limit the amount of business that can actually happen!
A strong referral relationship goes way beyond, โI do business, you do business, letโs do business.โ
In his teachings, Ivan highlights the GAINS Exchangeโa concept we use all the time in our One-to-One meetings to build real, foundational relationships with potential referral partners.
GAINS stands for:
๐ฏ Goals โ Sharing these helps us know exactly how to help one another achieve what we're aiming for.
๐ Accomplishments โ Knowing these builds mutual credibility.
โ Interests โ This is how we find common ground and build rapport! (You never know who might share your love for a good porch-sitting session or taking a scooter out for a weekend ride until you ask!)
๐ค Networks โ Discovering these lets us connect one another to diverse professionals.
๐ก Skills โ Sharing these opens new doors to doing business.
Ivan often shares a powerful story about two business owners who knew each other for over a year but never passed a single referral because their industries were entirely different. They didn't think they had anything in common. Then, they sat down and did a GAINS Exchange. They discovered they were both youth soccer coaches! They instantly bonded over that shared interest, started helping each other with practice drills, and became close friends.
Within a few months? The business referrals started pouring in. ๐คฏ
They ended up doing business together because they built a relationship over soccer, not sales.
The next time you have a One-to-One meeting, take Ivan's advice: take turns sharing your GAINS. Talk about more than just business. Find those common, non-business interests that endear you to the other person. You move beyond being just a salesperson and become a friend. And when people know and trust you, the referrals will naturally follow.
Iโd love to hear from you: How has talking about MORE than just business helped you build your professional relationships? Let me know in the comments! ๐๐ฃ๏ธ
