A Mayor’s Work Endures in a 40-Year Public-Private Partnership

Many programs and agencies in Northeast Ohio are working hard to grow and promote our region’s economy. Greater Cleveland Civic Connection is an initiative to bring the key private- and public-sector leaders together to coordinate and build upon these efforts, maximizing job creation and leveraging infrastructure improvements. By facilitation constant dialogue between the public partners and our region’s business community, Greater Cleveland Civic Connection has established a foundation for a significant, efficient coordinated focus upon Northeast Ohio’s future.

The Greater Cleveland Civic Connection traces its origins to aftermath of Cleveland’s default in 1978. Mayor George V. Voinovich was elected the following year and immediately began to forge a collaboration between the city government and Greater Cleveland’s business community. That vital collaboration led to the formation in 1984 of Build Up Greater Cleveland which focused upon key infrastructure investments in the region.

In 2016, the organization’s mission broadened and its name changed to the Greater Cleveland Civic Connection. An initiative of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Civic Connection promotes regular collaboration between private sector leadership and five vital public agencies: The City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA), the Port of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD).

While infrastructure remains among the group’s primary priorities, Civic Connection now works to facilitate wider-ranging economic development goals.
