⚡ High Electricity Demand Expected This Week (August 31 - September 6, 2026)

PJM forecasts very high electricity demand this afternoon, with a strong likelihood of setting a system peak. Extreme heat across the region is driving high energy demand, putting additional strain on the grid during peak hours.

What You Can Do:

Reducing electricity use during peak hours helps support grid reliability. Consider adjusting thermostats, delaying the use of non-essential equipment, or minimizing energy consumption where possible.

PJM has released the results of its latest capacity auction for the 2028/2029 delivery year, and the price of “keeping the lights on” across the region remains near record highs. The auction cleared at the cap of $325/MW‑day, securing about 138,318 MW of capacity (149,182 MW including FRR) to meet future peak demand, only about 2.5% below last year’s record price.

At these levels, PJM expects capacity charges to continue adding roughly 1.5–5% to customers' electricity bills over the delivery year, making energy efficiency, demand management, and smarter procurement strategies critical tools for businesses looking to control costs.

PJM has issued a Hot Weather Alert for July 15–17 as temperatures across the region push into the 90s and above. Based on current load and weather forecasts, PJM expects today’s system demand to peak in the mid‑160,000 MW range, with a potential annual peak likely to occur between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. EDT.

If your facility participates in peak‑demand management or demand response programs—or if you simply want to lower your future capacity charges—this is a critical window to reduce usage.

Practical steps include pre‑cooling buildings earlier in the day, raising thermostats a few degrees during 4–7 p.m., shifting non‑essential processes and major equipment runs outside that window, and turning off unnecessary lighting and electronics.

Coordinated actions during these hours help ease stress on the grid and can reduce your PLC (Peak Load Contribution), lowering future capacity costs on your bill.

Take note: Tomorrow, Thursday, July 16, is also expected to be another peak-demand day on the electrical grid.

Today is shaping up to be a record-setting day for electricity demand across the PJM grid.

Based on current load and weather forecasts, the system is expected to establish its annual peak between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM EDT.

Yesterday, July 1st, offered a preview of the strain:
- Peak demand reached 162.1 GW
- Grid usage hovered near 160 GW during the evening surge
- The system relied heavily on fossil fuels and nuclear generation (~147 GW), with ~20 GW from renewables

With extreme heat driving both air conditioning load and data center demand, PJM and the U.S. Department of Energy took emergency measures to maintain reliability—including authorizing backup generation to avoid broader disruptions.

Market signals are already reacting, with transmission congestion pushing prices above $600/MWh in some zones.

Looking ahead:
Friday, July 3, is also expected to be a high-demand day, but because it falls on a federal holiday, it will not be counted as a peak demand day—regardless of actual load.

For those managing energy costs, today’s peak window is critical. Monitoring usage and reducing load during these hours can significantly impact future capacity obligations.

Ampica’s sales team spent June on the green supporting Ohio agriculture and local healthcare, teeing off at two impact-focused golf outings in central and northeast Ohio.

Ampica was proud to be out on the course this June with partners who are investing in Ohio’s future.

Our sales team joined the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation Golf Invitational at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, supporting scholarships and programs that strengthen Ohio’s farm and food community. We also hit the fairways at the Bert L. Wolstein Legacy Golf Tournament at Glenmoor Country Club, benefiting University Hospitals and their mission to heal, teach, and discover.

Events like these are a great reminder that smart energy decisions and strong communities go hand in hand—and Ampica is committed to both.

⚡ Expected High Electricity Demand on the Grid Today!

Based on current PJM load and weather forecasts, a system annual peak could be established today, from 4 PM EDT to 7 PM EDT.

What to Expect: The grid will be under significant stress, potentially impacting stability and reliability.

Why This Matters: With extreme heat across the region, electricity use will be at its peak, making today a critical day for the grid.

The probability of establishing a peak is HIGH. Be prepared to reduce energy use as much as possible from 14:00 ET to 19:00 ET. We will continue to monitor the system to evaluate the probability of a coincident peak being set.
