Etiquette 101 - What’s In a Name
Let’s discuss the etiquette surrounding correcting others and accepting responsibility when being corrected on someone's name.
1. Assess the Need for Correction: Before correcting someone, consider whether it’s truly necessary.
2. Choose Privacy Over Public: If a correction is needed in a public setting, use a gentle tone and kind demeanor.
3. Match the Correction to the Setting: Tailor your approach based on the context—be it business, professional, casual, or friendly.
4. Address the Issue, Not the Person: Focus on the point that needs correction rather than making it about the individual.
The decision to correct someone is ultimately up to the misidentified person. The situation will dictate your response, but remember that it’s normal for everyone to make mistakes from time to time. Knowing how to issue a proper correction—whether you are the one who made the mistake or the one who has been mistaken—can help ease awkward moments.
Tips: 💡
• If You Misidentify Someone: When they correct you, respond kindly, take responsibility for the mistake, and apologize.
• If Someone Incorrectly Identifies You: You can choose to correct them immediately by saying, “Pardon me, my name is pronounced…” or you can address it later with, “I didn’t mention it during the introduction, but please accept my apology for…"
