Maybe “flyover country” has been onto something.

Iowa ranks #3 in America for saving money — and the Midwest absolutely dominates this map.

South Dakota: #4
Nebraska: #5
Kansas: #6
Missouri: #7
Indiana: #8
Ohio: #9

It’s easy to focus on what the Midwest doesn’t have.

But relatively affordable housing, lower everyday expenses, and incomes that can actually go somewhere make for a pretty compelling combination.

You don’t necessarily need a coastal salary to build wealth. Sometimes you just need your paycheck to go further.

I’ll happily take Iowa at #3.

I’m excited to share that I’ve earned the Wealth Management Certified Professional®️ (WMCP®️) designation!

The deeper I get into this profession, the more I realize that managing wealth is about much more than selecting investments. It’s about understanding how retirement income, taxes, risk management, estate planning, and a family’s long-term goals all fit together.

I pursued the WMCP®️ designation to continue sharpening my ability to help clients make confident, coordinated decisions with their wealth.

Six figures isn’t six figures everywhere.

A household earning $100,000 in one part of the country can have a completely different lifestyle than a household earning $100,000 somewhere else.

Housing. Taxes. Childcare. Transportation. Insurance. Even groceries.

It’s why I think income by itself is a pretty poor measure of how well someone is doing financially.

Someone making $150,000 in a very high-cost city may have less room in their budget than someone making $90,000 in a lower-cost community.

The number that matters isn’t just what you make.

It’s what you’re able to keep, save, invest, and ultimately build with it.

Where you live matters a lot more to your financial picture than we sometimes give it credit for.

Far fewer people compare property taxes.

The average U.S. household pays $3,119 annually in property taxes, but where you live can make that bill dramatically higher—or lower.

A lower purchase price doesn’t always mean a lower cost of ownership.

The other side of the conversation.

Last week, I shared the lowest-paying college degrees to encourage students to understand the financial implications of choosing a major.

Today, here’s the opposite end of the spectrum.

Engineering, technology, finance, and quantitative fields continue to command some of the highest median earnings in the workforce.

Salary shouldn’t be the only factor in choosing a career—but it should be one of them, especially when you’re making one of the largest financial investments of your life.

The best decision is an informed one.

PSA to every college student or parent of a college student:

Before you choose a major, research the average salary—not after you graduate, but before you enroll.

A college degree is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make. Understand both the cost and the expected return before making that decision.

As a side note, it’s sad to see that one of the careers with the greatest influence on our future is also one of the lowest-paying. Teachers deserve better.

This week I had a great time speaking with young professionals about careers in financial planning.

When I entered this profession, I thought it was mostly about investments and insurance. What I’ve learned is that it’s really about helping people make important life decisions with confidence.

Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, and shared their perspectives. It was a privilege to be part of the conversation.

In May, I stepped away from the office and spent some time with the people who matter most.

Watching my son run down the boardwalk, carrying him through the ocean, and walking the beach with my wife reminded me why we work so hard in the first place.

Financial planning isn’t really about investments, insurance, or retirement projections. Those are just tools.

The real goal is having the freedom and confidence to spend time with the people you love.

The markets will be open tomorrow. The emails will still be there.

But our kids won’t stay little forever.

Grateful for the time away, grateful for my family, and grateful for the clients who trust us to help them build lives worth living.
