I don’t love being the person who tells you a bill is going up. But I’d rather you heard it in September than found it in January.

California’s SB 122 makes software taxable starting January 1. Not just software you download — software you log into. Which is, for most of us, all of it.

Go add up your subscriptions tonight. It takes ten minutes and it turns a January surprise into a budget line.

The part I’m watching more closely: if you sell templates, presets, or anything digital, whether that counts as “software” is genuinely undecided. The state is taking comments until the 24th, and small sellers are barely in that file.

The IRS is switching off the system you file 1099s through. Most business owners haven't heard.

Two things changed this year, close enough together that people are going to walk into January with the wrong list and the wrong login:

The 1099 threshold went from $600 to $2,000. Fewer forms — but you still need a W-9 from every contractor, because you don't know in September who crosses $2,000 by December.
FIRE, the e-filing system, is being retired. If you file your own, you need a new IRIS transmitter code by November 9. You cannot set that up on January 30th.

Neither of these is your fault. They're just the kind of thing that's easy to miss when you're running a business instead of tracking IRS filing systems — which is fair, because you shouldn't have to.

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings about tax extensions.
An extension gives additional time to file the return. It generally doesn't extend the original deadline for paying tax that was due.
If you're unsure where your business stands, don't wait until the deadline to figure it out.
