If you haven't heard, today August 12th is National Vinyl Record Day commemorating the day Thomas Alva Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. We've come a long way since Edison played his voice reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb" from his phonograph - can you imagine Edison sitting in front of his phonograph today with his headphones on listening to Disturbed with the volume cranked?!

Edison launched his phonograph commercially in the 1880s and back then the media was a wax cylinder with grooves like a modern record. Around 1887 a machine was made that would play flat discs and through RCA Victor the Victrola was born. Edison competed with Victrola making his own Edison disc players and Edison discs but the disc used for RCA and eventually Columbia, Decca, etc. won out and became the standard - and eventually there would be a standard speed for that day - 78 rpm (revolutions per minute)

Ever wonder why people still call 12" vinyl records "albums"? Going back to the early to mid 1900s, the "78" disc would only have one song per side. If an artist like Frank Sinatra, for example, wanted to release eight new songs, the record company would issue the records in an album with a front and back hard cover and sleeve pages to hold four "78" records inside. When the 33 1/3 rpm lp (long playing) record was invented in 1949, it enabled multiple songs to be recorded on each side of the record, and the moniker "album" stuck with the new media.
